Book Description
The Australian Mining Industry is a major contributor to the national economy. The export revenues from the various metals and minerals mined from 'The Lucky Country' read like telephone numbers; make those international telephone numbers. Dubious investors may be concerned whether what has become a hot sector of the Australian sharemarket will continue to show growth in 2011. Or has all the future value of high commodity prices already been priced into resources company share prices? For some resources stocks, the answer is yes: The values of some companies in this author's opinion have become stretched. But for other resources stocks the answer is absolutely not: There are still spectacular share price gains around the corner for a number of resources stocks. 'A Sharebuyer's Guide to Investing in the Australian Mining Boom' will help you evaluate which stocks in the mining sector have the best chance of outperforming the market. Includes an A to Z (Aluminium to Zinc) of commodities and company profiles of 40 Emerging ASX-listed Resources Companies.

- In 2003, four mining shares rose over four times in price, with one gaining ten times.- In just the first two months of 2004, 26 mining shares increased more than 20%, with five shares doubling.- Merrill Lynch's World Mining Trust is the UK's best performing fund over the past three years, having risen by over 200 per cent. But is the mining boom about to end?Not according to this book, by Michael Coulson, Chairman of the Association of Mining Analysts. Coulson argues that, if anything, we are still in the early stages of prolonged strength in mining stocks and despite what some commentators are saying, the boom is far from over.FROM THE BACK COVERThe prospect of instant riches gives the mining sector an obvious glamour. And when the mining sector begins to run it can be an awesome sight and the excitement generated can be every bit as seductive and heady as that which enveloped markets during the internet boom. But due to the counter-cyclical nature of many mining stocks, they can also offer a valuable refuge when stock markets turn down. In this book, Michael Coulson gives a masterly overview of the sector, explains both the rewards and the pitfalls of investing in mining shares and argues convincingly that mining should once again form a core sector for all investors. The book is for anyone interested in mining, and particularly mining as an investment. Whilst it contains material which will be useful to even experienced followers of the sector, its main target is those who are interested in mining but perhaps not particularly familiar with the sector, and would like to know more. All the subjects are covered that are fundamental to acquiring sufficient knowledge about the miningsector to invest in it with confidence. While the mining s

"Financial research has inspired methods of firm valuation which have greatly improved efficient allocation of capital in the equity markets. Yet the highly specialised junior mining sector has so far eluded any reliable method of systematic valuation. This study reviews the literature to discover what factors the market utilises to value junior mining companies." - Abstract.

Book Description
DR ALLAN TRENCH has been exposed to the inner workings of Australian mining and exploration companies for three decades - including approaching ten years' experience as a director himself. Over the years he has penned some insightful articles about boardroom practice, management issues and common strategic dilemmas that companies have faced in the sector and how they were resolved - as well as about broader issues covering mineral commodity markets and pertaining to topical resources sector issues that directors, managers and investors need to both contemplate and understand. For the first time he brings this knowledge and experience together in one entertaining and informative book, STRICTLY (MINING) BOARDROOM. The book is a mix of boardroom practice, resource sector management and investment observations and discussion, written in Trench's trademark dry humourous style. Many of the subject themes end in a series of questions for you either to think about, to apply, or even to rate your own organisation. The questions and insights are well placed as they force you to stop and think rather than just read on. Underpinning each theme is an in-depth understanding of the strategic issues and choices being faced by mining companies today. All these ingredients blended together provide for an insightful analysis and greater understanding of Australia's mining sector. Who could not be tempted to read more about: 10 reasons to love potash Gold in them there hills - but which hills? The Martian's guide to mining royalties Ruddite: A new mineral discovery in Canberra? But there is a serious side. It takes unique skills to lead a resources company. When you understand what goes on in the boardroom, you better understand the company you are working for or investing in.

Book Description
Investment in Australian mining and resources stocks has the potential to deliver spectacular returns or to be financially disastrous. Considering its poor average returns over the last decade, this is not a good arena in which to apply the 1990s investment recipe of placing your (borrowed) funds on the hottest stocks and sitting back! However, selective investment in the area can pay handsomely. Allan Trench and Thomas Judge, authors of The Insider? Guide to Success on the Australian Sharemarket and The Insider? Guide to Success in Australian Business and Management, bring you the knowledge necessary to make informed (and hopefully lucrative) investment decisions in the resources sector. With a focus on metal mining and exploration companies, The Insider? Guide to Investing in Australian Mining and Resources Stocks is written in the authors?trademark witty and easy-to-understand style.

Book Description
This paper studies the exposure of Australian gold mining firms to changes in the gold price. We use a theoretical framework to formulate testable hypotheses regarding the gold exposure of gold mining firms. The empirical analysis based on all gold mining firms in the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Gold Index for the period from January 1980 to December 2010 finds that the average gold beta is around one but varies significantly through time. The relatively low average gold beta is attributed to firm's hedging and diversification. We further find an asymmetric effect in gold betas, i.e. the gold exposure increases with positive gold price changes and decreases with negative gold price changes consistent with gold mining companies exercising real options on gold.
