Excerpt from On the Anomalies of Accommodation and Refraction of the Eye: With a Preliminary Essay on Physiological Dioptrics My essay upon Ametropie en hare gevolgen ("Ametropia and its Results"), published in 1860, was confined to the anomalies of refraction, and treated of these exclusively from the dioptric point of view. In the preface, however, I announced my intention of producing, subsequently to the appearance of that essay, a complete system of the anomalies of refraction and accommodation: the anomalies of refraction, including the subject of astigmatism, were to be treated of also from an anatomical and practical point of view, and the anomalies of accommodation were to be developed both in their opposition to, and their connexion with, the anomalies of refraction. When, later, I was honoured with a request, on the part of the New Sydenham Society, to prepare my essay for an English edition, I felt bound to endeavour to complete my work on the plan alluded to. This I have done to the best of my ability. The experience of many years, the examination of many thousands of eyes, in which I have been zealously assisted by several of my pupils, have been made available. I believe that my work has gained by its enlargement. I cannot, however, fail to regret that its bulk has increased beyond my expectation, and I feel bound to apologise to the Council both for the delay in its appearance, and for the inconsiderate manner in which I have used the liberty allowed me for its extension. May the intrinsic value of the additions made plead successfully in my behalf. One object I have kept constantly in view, - to make the book, notwithstanding its great size, useful and, in all its parts, easily accessible to the practical physician. It substantially embodies the instruction given to the demonstration classes in the University of Michigan, and While it is intended, primarily, to facilitate the work of Junior students in preparing the subject, the perusal of its pages may prove of benefit to other readers. It has been thought unnecessary to go into the more intricate and scientific demonstrations of the refraction of light, Which are, happily, not of an extremely practical nature. The chief aim has been to go explicitly into every practical detail so that the beginner may not be lost in the labyrinth, and it is hoped that those more advanced may not tire of the minutia. It has been compiled during the hours Which could be spared from active duties, and though the writer has sought to be exact in all his assertions, an occasional inaccuracy may have inadvertently crept in. Excerpt from The Refraction and Accommodation of the Eye and Their Anomalies It cannot be denied that the practice of the present day leaves much to be desired in this respect. This is no doubt due to the defective Physical and Mathematical education which is frequently received by the Practitioner, and explains why he instinctively avoids the study of anything bearing a resemblance to Algebra, and looks upon it as something very difficult to be mastered, - something quite without the confines of his sphere. With regard to the study of the Refraction of the Eye, the amount of Mathematical knowledge which is essential in practice is, however, very easily acquired. Indeed, even in following the course of the rays of light through the entire dioptric system of the eye, as far as the retina - a calculation which, towards the end, becomes somewhat complicated - the Author has not found it meces sary to go beyond the elementary knowledge of Mathematics which he acquired at college, when studying the obligatory Greek and Latin.
