Book Description
This study considers the instabilities that result when an electron beam is injected into a plasma. A number of different models of the system are considered, and all instabilities are classified according to whether they are convective instabilities (amplifying waves) or nonconvective (absolute) instabilities. The study also analyzes the instabilities in unbounded beam-plasma systems and in systems of finite extent transverse to the electron stream and gives a detailed consideration of the possibility of a strong interaction with the ions in a hot-electron plasma. In addition, the author presents mathematical criteria for identifying absolute instabilities and amplifying waves. These criteria are based only on an analysis of the dispersion equation of the system and are not restricted to beam-plasma systems. Two things need to be said about this book: the chapter on absolute and convective instabilities makes an important contribution to the field. Second, it should be pointed out that the theoretical results are reduced to a form which make them readily available to an experimentalist. Plasma physicists and electronic engineers will be interested in this work.

Book Description
Electron bunches in storage rings can ionize the background gas and depending on the bunch length and spacing between bunches the ions formed can be trapped by the electron space charge forces. It is the purpose of this note to show that the possibility of exciting the two stream instability then exists. This instability if excited would saturate by giving thermal velocity to the electrons i.e., by blowing up the emittance of the beam. Experiments carried out at ADONE have observed an increase in the electron beam emittance in the presence of background ions.

Book Description
In recent years the significant progress in satellite-based observations of plasma states and associated electromagnetic phenomena in space has resulted in the accumulation of much evidence of various plasma instabilities. Today plasma instabilities are believed to be responsible for electromagnetic radiation as well as for many of the macroscopic dynamics of plasmas in space. Most students who begin to study plasma physics are intrigued by the unstable nature of plasmas compared with other states of matter; however, they often become frustrated because there are so many in stabilities. Such frustration explains in part why there is no textbook which treats this subject exclusively. A description of plasma instabilities in a systematic way is nontrivial and takes a pertinacious effort. This book is an attempt to provide a basic introduction on the subject and covers most of the important instabilities. However, the author must apologize for any omission of references to contributions of individuals who deserve more credit. The reader is assumed to have a general knowledge of plasma physics obtainable in an undergraduate course. The book is intended to be used as a reference text on the subject of plasma instabilities at the under graduate level as well as for a text in a special course in graduate school. Because the book is part of a series on physics and chemistry in space, emphasis is placed on plasma instabilities relevant in space plasmas.

Book Description
When there is relative motion between electrons and ions across a magnetic field in a plasma, it has been shown theoretically that a modified two stream instability may develop. This instability has a fluid-like character and can interact strongly with the ions. Also, it is insensitive to the electron-ion temperature ratio. Previous analyses have been restricted to the electrostatic limit. In the paper the authors consider electromagnetic and finite electron beta effects on this instability. These effects are found to stabilize the instability in certain regions of the parameter space characterizing the plasma. Marginal stability curves are presented. Perhaps the most important result is that for waves which are likely to produce large ion heating, instability occurs provided U/(v sub A) approximately equals or

Book Description
Handbook on Plasma Instabilities, Volume 2 consists of four chapters on plasma instabilities. Chapter 14 discusses the various aspects of microinstabilities. Beam-plasma systems are covered in Chapter 15, while the various stabilization methods are presented in Chapter 16. This book concludes with deliberations on parametric effects in Chapter 17. Other topics discussed include the microinstabilities of a homogeneous unmagnetized plasma; kinetic theory of macroscopic instabilities; basic beam physics; and beam-plasma instabilities. The magnetic field configuration stabilization; macroscopic nonmagnetic stabilization methods; parametric instabilities in homogeneous unmagnetized plasmas; and parametric effects in bounded and inhomogeneous plasmas are also elaborated in this text. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on unstable plasma.
