Book Description
A Choice of Anglo-Saxon Verse contains the Old English texts of all the major short poems, such as 'The Battle of Maldon', 'The Dream of the Rood', 'The Wanderer' and 'The Seafarer', as well as a generous representation of the many important fragments, riddles and gnomic verses that survive from the seventh to the twelfth centuries, with facing-page verse translations. These poems are the well-spring of the English poetic tradition, and this anthology provides a unique window into the mind and culture of the Anglo-Saxons. The volume is an essential companion to Faber's edition of Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney.

Book Description
Excerpt from Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry: Edited, Together With Additional Notes, Introductory Notices, &C As the question of alliteration (which indeed requires but a short notice) will be more conveniently treated Of after we shall have ascertained the existence and nature of that metre Of which it forms the chief ornament, I shall commence with those topics which are in themselves of the greatest extent and interest, and shall endeavour to show both that the anglo-saxon poetry does really differ from their prose by the usage of metrical divisions, and that the general rhythm and cadence of their verse is not alto gether undiscoverable. Book Description
Excerpt from Specimens of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, Vol. 1: Biblical and Classical Themes The matter contained in the following specimens as well as order in which these are arranged, corresponds to a great extent with the contents of the first part of the 'specimens of anglo-saxon Prose'. By a comparison of the two the student will be able to appreciate the methods of the anglo-saxon poets in the treatment of themes taken from the Old Testament and from classical sources. As the specimens are intended to be used in connexion with the study of anglo-saxon literature, and the general form in which the texts have been preserved is not original, a more normal spelling than that actually found in the manuscripts has here and there been introduced. Such alterations are neither numerous nor important, and the removal of the exceptional forms not Oulv facilitates the understanding of the text, but will help to prevent undue importance being attached to mere matters of form. As before, I am much indebted to Dr. Schmidt Petersen of Bredstedt for generous help in supervising the printing of this work. Excerpt from Codex Exoniensis: A Collection of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, From a Manuscript in the Library of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter My endeavours to give a version of the Riming Poem have failed. A translation of some of its easier portions will be found among the notes, where I have ventured an opinion as to one cause of the difficulties attending this extraordinary and to me unintelligible production.
