Despite a more diverse U.S. population, racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in the U.S. healthcare professions. Further, increasing the enrollment of Underrepresented Minority (URM) students in health professions is a challenging and urgent issue. The literature had not explored a comparison of racial and ethnic groups’ exposure to allied health professions. This current study investigated URM and non-URMs’ exposure to and knowledge of allied health fields; in order to determine, whether some of the groups are getting exposed differentially to different methods, and to identify the resources necessary to expose and provide knowledge of allied health professions to recruit students into allied health programs. The researcher conducted a quantitative study with African American (n = 21), Caucasian (n = 137), and Hispanic (n = 67) allied health students. Participants completed an Exposure to Allied Health Fields survey about their exposure to, and knowledge of allied health fields. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc tests were conducted to analyze the differences between the three groups. Results revealed statistically significant differences between the three groups with respect to exposure to allied health fields; however, there was no statistically significant difference of knowledge of allied health fields between the three groups. Additionally, results showed that African American and Hispanic students were less exposed to health careers courses and social media used to promote allied health careers. Future research needs to identify other significant factors for URM not pursuing allied health professions.

This book introduces the reader to the scope and extent of minority underrepresentation in the health professions. Underrepresented minority groups include Afro-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans. Drs. Lecca and Watts have cited a number of studies and papers describing trends in minority enrollment in health profession institutions. Among the areas which the authors focus on are the recruitment and admissions process which they note need intensive reexamination by higher education administrators and educators. They describe examples of academic enrichment and retention programs. They suggest that minority retention and the ultimate goal, increase in graduation, will only be achieved if financial and other forms of institutional and private/public support are forthcoming. Minority groups are severely underrepresented in the scientific workforce. To encourage minorities to pursue careers in research, a variety of "intervention programs" have been created at the pre-college, college, and graduate school levels. While there is a belief that these programs often achieve their goals, there is relatively little understanding of the factors that contribute to that success. The Division of Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health has established a grant program to support research to better understand the factors that contribute to the success of intervention programs. The MORE Division asked the National Academies to organize a workshop focusing on issues addressed by the grant program. This workshop summary presents examples of previous research on intervention programs, describes ways to formulate effective research questions and conduct research to identify the key elements that lead to successful intervention programs, and outlines ways to foster a community of researchers in this area.
