This study attempts to evaluate the influence of soil conservation practices on the surface hydrology in the Galena watershed. Poor soil conservation practices within the watershed from the mid-1800s until the mid-1900s increased surface runoff while decreasing baseflow. The poor soil conservation practices affected soil erosion, flood magnitudes, channel morphology, and sedimentation processes. The influence of poor soil conservation practices within the Galena watershed reached a maximum during the early 1900s. Efforts begun by the Soil Erosion Service in the mid-1930s began to reduce surface runoff by educating farmers in proper soil conservation methods. Aerial photography analysis indicates a steady increase in strip cropping and contour farming since 1937. The increased use of soil conservation practices within the watershed has decreased surface runoff more than 20% and increased the baseflow. The influence of soil conservation was evaluated by controlling climatic variables through an analysis of similar storm events. Statistical analyses indicate similarity among the storm events, reducing the climatic influence. Hydrographs corresponding to the selected storms were analyzed and an estimation of surface runoff and baseflow was calculated for each storm throughout the study period. Overall results indicate a general decreasing trend in surface runoff with the corresponding increasing trend in baseflow during the study period. Wisconsin; Steep topography. Theses. (EDC).

Knowledge about sediment yields is important in developing management strategies for fluvial systems. The effect of sediment must be considered in the design of river structures and in determining water quality for biotic systems. Changes in sediment transport regimes are difficult to understand or predict due to the complexity of factors that influence sediment flux in fluvial systems. Relationships about sediment source, sinks and transport have long been studied and many of these relationships have been quantitatively and qualitatively defined. However, due to the scarcity of long-term sediment records it is often difficult to test these relationships. This study examines one of these long-term suspended sediment records for the Mississippi River at East Dubuque, Illinois from 1943 to 1996. Daily suspended sediment concentrations from the United States Army Corps of Engineers station at East Dubuque were analyzed for the spring and summer months (March - August). Sediment concentrations were analyzed in terms of average concentration during different hydrologic events at the large basin scale. These events included the spring snowmelt runoff (low and high magnitude) and different intensity storm runoff (low, moderate and high). Additionally, peak sediment concentrations during storm runoff were also analyzed. The general trend for all of these analyses suggests a significant decrease in sediment concentrations from the 1940s to the 1990s. The strongest trends are found in high magnitude snowmelt runoff and in high and moderate magnitude storm runoff. Peak concentrations in storm runoff have decreased from about 1000 ppm in the l940s to about 200 ppm in the 1990s. Average concentrations have likewise decreased from about 200 ppm in the 1940s to 100 ppm in the 1990s. Changes in land management practices are identified as being the primary environmental factor influencing sediment concentrations.

This volume consists of twenty chapters addressing different aspects of the theme of fluvial processes and environmental change. The overall coverage is broad; scientifically, (from modelling to alluvial dating), geographically (from arid zone flash-flooding to glacial meltwaters) and in time (from contemporary process studies to the Quaternary). The introductory chapter sets the context, which is an attempt to show how studies of fluvial processes can help us in understanding and therefore predicting the impact of environmental change on our rivers, riverine resources and landscapes. Environmental change includes both climatic factors, however caused, and human impacts on river basins. The differentiation of these two factors is discussed in several chapters whilst others take a more holistic approach. Both climatic and human factors have, and will remain, to act together and so their interactions need to be understood. Fluvial Processes and Environmental Change is divided into five sections, commencing with the slope-catchment scale and proceeding to studies of channel response, then floodplain processes and floodplain response and finally two studies from glacierised basins. The volume originated as a two-day session of the British Geomorphological Research Group and contributors from Europe, the USA and Australia were included in order to provide a wide perspective on the topic. This book will be a valuable reference for postgraduates and researchers in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, Quaternary science, geology and environmental science.
