Automobile Industry and Some Explanations Besides the conventional measure of vertical integration shown in Figure we present in Figure an alternative measure of vertical integration, namely value added to cost of goods sold over cost of goods sold. The value added over sales measure of vertical integration includes market power aberrations reflected in sales, which tne latter measure avaios. We observe in Figure l(c, d) that the degree of vertical integration for General flotors has declined significantly from 1951 and for Ferd from 1950 onwards. Since bath firms kept increasing their ourenasea naterials from vendors, we may h/pothesize that the industry experienced 1nc-aseo complexity of operations and/or higher aages.
