Giraudoux and the Inspector
Author: Leroy J. Marts

Pages : 68
Book Description
This thesis constitutes the second phse of an acting project performed in the course of graduate studies toward a Master of Arts degree in Theatre. The first phase was the performance of the role of the Inspector in the University of Kansas City Playhouse production of "The Enchanted", by Jean Giraudoux, directed by Dr. John Newfield. The purpose of the thesis is to supplement the actual acting assignments. Most of the research necessary for this second phase was performed subsequent to the production, in order to augment the analysis. This was necessary because of the time requirements, and because in educational theatre more than any other it is necessary to rely on the interpretation of the director during rehearsal and production. In analyzing the role in retrospect, however, it is possible to consider the problem more extensively. Beginning with a consideration og Giraudoux's life and works, this thesis attempts to show his personal development as a novelist and playwright, as well as of the influences thereon. Following this is an analysis of the play itself, together with an account of the Inspector as an acting problem in light of the foregoing and with the aid of notes and observations made during the production. The result intended is a comprehensive understanding of the play in general, and of the Inspector, in particular, so that anyone seeking to prepare for or to analyze the role of the Inspector, or any role, will have a more complete understanding of the general and special problems which can and do arise, and of the procedure necessary to effect a successful analysis.
