Book Description
Excerpt from An Address Delivered in the Church at Princeton: The Evening Before the Annual Commencement of the College of New Jersey, September 27, 1831 There are some present - tho' the eyes, 'the smiles, and the Complexions Of youth remind me there can be but few who may remember that he, who has now the honor to address them, quitted this very platform, bidding farewell to collected friends and to collegiate life, exactly one and twenty years ago. My young brethren, in Obedience to whose summons I must awhile trespass upon your attention, have since sprung into existence - have been carefully fashioned by the hands Of parents and Of preceptors - and will to-morrow, with spirits as buoyant and hopes as exhilarating as mine then were, launch upon the boundless, the uncertain, but ever attractive world - I come, like the veteran mariner, to Consult with them on their contemplated voyage - to hint how'they may best provide for its happy progress and its honorable end - and to give them the onward cheer and hearty benediction Of a brother and a friend. Book Description
Excerpt from A Discourse on Popular Education: Delivered in the Church at Princeton, the Evening Before the Annual Commencement of the College of New Jersey, September 26, 1826 Passing from those very general views, which have been already suggested, of the importance of knowledge, there exist motives for its dissemination, in America, which the peculiar nature of our political institutions irresistably en forces, and the obvious progress of our society and manners admonishes us, to weigh, and to appreciate more seriously, perhaps, than we are prone to do. Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian Duty of Christian Women: A Discourse, Delivered in the Church of Princeton, New Jersey, August 23, 1825, Before the Princeton Female Society, for the Support of a Female School in India These words are found in the narrative of a very inter esting incident in the life of our blessed Redeemer. Six days before the Jewish Passover at which he entered on his last sufferings, a supper, or festival entertainment, was made for him, at Bethany a village in the environs of Jerusalem, frequently mentioned in the. Evangelical his tory, and particularly memorable as the residence of La zarus, whom he raised from the dead. The supper was made at the house of one Simon, a leper who, it is high ly probable, had been cleansed by the miraculous power of Christ. Lazarus was a guest, at this entertainment, which some Suppose was made, either wholly or in part, at his expense and his sisters, Martha and Mary, were both present. With her characteristick activity, Martha served at the supper-table; and Mary with her wonted reverential love to her Lord and Redeemer, and animated, no doubt, with the liveliest gratitude for the interposition of his almighty power, in calling her beloved brother from the tomb, gave him on this occasion a signal expression of her sense of obligation, and of the high estimation in which she wished that others should hold him. She had made preparation for this expression of her gratitude and love. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church; Her Ministry and Sacraments: Lectures Delivered on the L. P, Stone Foundation at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1890 How this consummation is to be reached, I do not undertake to dictate or to prophesy; but sure I am that the wish, if it shall attain to the height and depth and breadth which the Scriptures warrant and enjoin, will be father not only to the thought, but also to the deed. The Obstacles in the way are but wood, hay, and stubble, when compared with the one Foundation on which we all build, and in whose praise our hearts and tongues unite. If in the more controversial parts of these Lectures anything shall be found inconsistent in fact or in spirit with these views, it will be a cause Of sincere regret. Book Description
Excerpt from Introductory Lecture: Delivered in the Theological Seminary, Princeton N. J. Nov; 7, 1828 However beautiful it may be in theory, to regard the king as the father of a great family; and as such, bound and authorized, to provide for all its wants, secular and spiritual; it never can, in the present state of the world, be carried into practice, without either making the state subservient to the church, or the church an engine of government to the state. The former has been the result in Catholic, the lat ter in Protestant countries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
