Book Description
When TV celebrity Dinah Shore sang "See the USA in your Chevrolet," 1950s America took her to heart. Every summer, parents piled the kids in the back seat, threw the luggage in the trunk, and took to the open highway. Chronicling this innately American ritual, Susan Rugh presents a cultural history of the American middle-class family vacation from 1945 to 1973, tracing its evolution from the establishment of this summer tradition to its decline. The first in-depth look at post-World War II family travel, Rugh's study recounts how postwar prosperity and mass consumption-abetted by paid vacation leave, car ownership, and the new interstate highway system-forged the ritual of the family road trip and how that ritual became entwined with what it meant to be an American. With each car a safe haven from the Cold War, vacations became a means of strengthening family bonds and educating children in parental values, national heritage, and citizenship. Rugh's history looks closely at specific types of trips, from adventures in the Wild West to camping vacations in national parks to summers at Catskill resorts. It also highlights changing patterns of family life, such as the relationship between work and play, the increase in the number of working women, and the generation gap of the sixties. Distinctively, Rugh also plumbs NAACP archives and travel guides marketed specifically to blacks to examine the racial boundaries of road trips in light of segregated public accommodations that forced many black families to sleep in cars-a humiliation that helped spark the civil rights struggle. In addition, she explains how the experience of family camping predisposed baby boomers toward a strong environmental consciousness. Until the 1970s recession ended three decades of prosperity and the traditional nuclear family began to splinter, these family vacations were securely woven into the fabric of American life. Rugh's book allows readers to relive those wondrous wanderings across the American landscape and to better understand how they helped define an essential aspect of American culture. Notwithstanding the rueful memories of discomforts and squabbles in a crowded car, those were magical times for many of the nation's families.

Book Description
Change the world one trip at a time. In this illuminating collection of stories and lessons from the road, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves shares a powerful message that resonates now more than ever. With the world facing divisive and often frightening events, from Trump, Brexit, and Erdogan, to climate change, nativism, and populism, there's never been a more important time to travel. Rick believes the risks of travel are widely exaggerated, and that fear is for people who don't get out much. After years of living out of a suitcase, he still marvels at how different cultures find different truths to be self-evident. By sharing his experiences from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East, Rick shows how we can learn more about own country by viewing it from afar. With gripping stories from Rick's decades of exploration, this fully revised edition of Travel as a Political Act is an antidote to the current climate of xenophobia. When we travel thoughtfully, we bring back the most beautiful souvenir of all: a broader perspective on the world that we all call home. All royalties from the sale of Travel as a Political Act are donated to support the work of Bread for the World, a non-partisan organization working to end hunger at home and abroad.

Book Description
Features a new “where are they now” section, updating readers on lives of expedition’s original climbers Fully updated and detailed resources based on the "Anti-Racism in the Outdoors" (ARITO) guide Readers’ Guide explores additional context and questions for further consideration Outdoor journalist James Edward Mills’s book, The Adventure Gap, is a groundbreaking volume that is equal parts adventure story, history, and inspiration as it chronicles the first American all-Black summit attempt on Denali in 2013. Mills uses this momentous expedition as a jumping-off point to explore diversity in the outdoors, from Mathew Henson who stood at the North Pole in 1909 to contemporary adventurers such as polar explorer Barbara Hillary and rock climber Kai Lightner. This tenth anniversary edition once again shares the compelling events that unfolded during Expedition Denali’s summit bid. But it also provides fresh context: A new thought-provoking afterword by Mills examines what has evolved in and around the outdoor community since that effort. He highlights progress and inspiring stories, such as Full Circle Everest, an expedition led by Phillip Henderson that put an all-Black team on top of the world’s highest peak. And he points to places where we can and should all strive for higher achievement. The Adventure Gap has become an essential text in outdoor education and inspiration--a story of our times, now more relevant than ever.

Book Description
Many of us dream of quitting our jobs, hopping on a plane, and escaping our daily reality to frolic around on a beach for a while. But for most of us, it's just a dream - until now. How to Quit Your Job & Travel is a practical, step-by-step guide to one of the most exciting, exhilarating, and terrifying things you'll ever do. You'll learn how to tackle each of the challenges preventing you from taking off on a long-term trip, from finances to fear to returning to reality - and all the nitty-gritty logistics along the way. But once you do actually pack your bags, throw your stuff into storage, and head off - what's next? Lia Garcia, co-founder and CEO of one of the most-read travel blogs in the world, spills all the things nobody tells you about the reality of long term travel - and coming home again - with stories from her own disastrous year-long honeymoon. About the Book This book is divided into four sections: Part One focuses on laying the groundwork for your trip, including the preparations and decisions that take place well before you leave. You'll learn to identify and navigate fears and obstacles in your way as you develop a rough outline for your trip, set yourself a departure deadline, calculate the cost of your adventure, start working towards a specific savings goal, and turn your travel dream into an actionable plan. Part Two takes place in the months before your trip, as you finalize your plans, pack your bags, book your itinerary, and tie up loose ends at home. You'll learn how to effectively plan a long-term trip, tackle each piece of the logistical puzzle of placing your life on hold, find out what to pack (and what to leave at home), and take off on the adventure of a lifetime. Part Three prepares you for the trip itself, including all the things that nobody tells you about long-term travel, how to stay safe and prevent theft, and what to do if you find yourself running out of funds. You'll learn about the many challenges of long-term travel, the beauty of "travel magic," and how to overcome challenges while you're on the road. Part Four occurs after the trip, as you return home and reintegrate into ordinary life. We'll cover how to prepare yourself for the most difficult part of long-term travel, including picking back up where you left off with your career (or choosing not to), and how to use the skills you learned during your travels to identify your needs and adjust to the life you've returned to. In each part of the book, you'll find specific, actionable advice interwoven with stories and mishaps from the author's year-long honeymoon. At the end of the book is a reference section containing all of the websites, apps, businesses, academic studies, spreadsheet templates, and tools mentioned or recommended, as well as tables organizing specific information you'll need as you plan your trip. You'll also recieve acces to a digital and printable version of the "Reference" section.
