Author: Velibor Colic
Publisher: Pushkin Press
ISBN: 1908968532
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 83
Book Description
The life of the painter Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was chaotic and tragically brief. Consisting of a series of vignettes, mostly set in the painter's studio and peopled by his lover Jeanne Hébuterne (who ended her own life the day after Modigliani's death), the prostitutes who were his occasional models and several Bohemian visitors, the novel spans the last months of Modigliani's life, evoking the strange workings of the painter's troubled and often drug-fuelled mind and its expression in his paintings, ultimately succeeding in conveying something of the intense artistic life of Paris in the first decades of the twentieth century.

Pages : 221
Book Description
Modigliani (1884-1920), a painter who didn’t find much happiness in his native Italy, managed only to find sorrow in France. From this unhappiness was born an original style of painting, influenced by African art, Cubism, and nights of drinking in Montparnasse. His female nudes, with their profound sensuality, aggressive nudity, and enigmatic faces, express the suffering and lack of recognition of Modigliano. He died at the age of 36. This book is made up of paintings which created scandals in their day, but which nowadays are considered inoffensive.

Amedeo Avogadro
Author: M. Morselli
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400962657
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 385
Book Description
Quantum refert in quae tempora vel optimi cujusque virtus incidet. (From an architrave on the Palatine.) The history of the development of scientific thought offers several examples of unconventional, perplexing and untimely conjectures advanced by obscure men. The molecular hypothesis set forth by Amedeo Avogadro in 1811 is one of these. It was little noticed when proposed and it soon fell into oblivion. Although numerous attempts have been made in the past one hundred years to identify the main reasons for the neglect and the indifference which surrounded the molecular hypothesis, very little effort has been devoted to showing how historical circumstances and Avogadro's own personality hindered the acceptance of the concepts he had proposed. After half a century of intense scientific activity, Avogadro passed away as little known in Italy as abroad. He had few close friends and his personal life seemed centered on his large family and his work. Outside this limited circle, he avoided social engagements and intellectual contacts. This attitude may have been encouraged by the political situation in Piedmont, his native country, which remained essentially hostile to intellectual activity until 1840, by which time Avogadro was sixty-four. The only respite in Piedmont had come during the short-lived Napoleonic regime; and quite remarkably, the molecular hypothesis was conceived and published at the very end of this period.

Amedeo

Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 388
Book Description
War-time love story set in Abyssinia, Eritrea and the Yemen 1935-1945. Amedeo Guillet is still alive and living in County Meath, Ireland. Khadija is lost. This is the story of Amedeo Guillet - an Italian calvary officer who was sent out to Abyssinia as part of Mussolini's army to establish and command a troupe of 2,000 Spahis - or Arabic calvary. He met and fell in love with Khadija - a beautiful Ethiopian Muslim. Together they held up the British lorries heaving up the mountain road to Asmara and blew up the important Ponte Aosta. Eventually captured, Amedeo went on the run disguised as an Arab, eventually making it to Yemen, only to be thrown in jail. This is a rare view of the Second World War from an Italian perpective; particularly valuable are the chapters that tell the story of Italian resistance to the Nazis, and their subsequent withdrawal from Italy in 1943. There are few stories more cinemagraphic than this - Fascist Italy, his early years in Ethiopia commanding the Cossack-like Spahis, the brutal Abyssinian war waged by the Duce, Italian and British colonial rivalry; Amedeo led the last ever cavalry charge the British army faced (Eritrea 1941 - they were massacred by tanks and sub-machine guns), defeat and guerrilla warfare against the British; then flight, disguised as an Arab, imprisonment in the Yemen and a great love lost as he leaves his beloved Khadija behind to face her future alone and returns to Italy, to his fiancée and a career as a distinguished Italian diplomat and Arabist. Amedeo is still alive and living in County Meath, Ireland. Sebastian O'Kelly is a journalist for the Mail and Telegraph and has Amedeo's full co-operation in writing this book. This is a very valuable and absolutely stunning story, beautifully told by O'Kelly.

Book Description
Amedeo left the Convent early one morning, not long before his thirteenth birthday. It was the only home he had ever known; the kind old priest, Don Bernardino, and the nuns in the Convent were his only family. But, the day before, he had learned for the first time that he had a mother-and that his mother was alive. From that moment, Amedeo knew that the only important thing in the world was to find her. For many years no word had come from the gentle young woman who had once left her baby son with the nuns. The only clue Amedeo had was the name of the town near Florence where she had once lived. But that was enough to start with and, in spite of Don Bernardino's attempts to dissuade him, the boy started off bravely on foot to claim the mother and the love that were rightfully his.
