Book Description
When Durfee rode up the valley, he found that the country fitted his mind as a glove fits the hand—the sort of glove that he preferred to wear—a little lighter in the leather and more delicate in the make than most of the buckskin gloves that a cowboy will buy. He liked the look of things, because that look was clean. He saw the gleam of water, here and there; water that looked as though it might be running even in the dry middle of September, after a rainless season. And there were plenty of hills for variety, and yet it was a range that a man could gallop over. Three men, on this sort of a lay, could do the work that sometimes took the riding of ten in worse regions. And then the grass grew thick and short on the ground, the sort of grass that is sweetest on a cow’s tooth, that lays the fat round and hard along her backbone, to say nothing of horses. It was a good limestone country, too. He could see the white ribs and elbows of the stone punching through the sides of the hills. And where limestone shows, it will be in the water, and the limestone water makes bone, and bone is the first necessity in the scheme of things, if you want to build a horse.

Book Description
"Silas Durfee had come up against a lot of outlaws as a Texas Ranger, but he had never encountered one as cold and cruel as Spot Lester. There was a man who would as soon slit a throat as swat a fly. Hating Durfee for foiling one of his plans, Lester schemed and plotted and dreamed of the day he'd kill Durfee. Finally that day came. He had Durfee right where he wanted him-trapped in Torture Canyon where the heat was enough to turn a man's brain to smoke and the only way out was through a hail of rifle fire. It wasn't the first time Silas Durfee had done battle with Spot Lester-but it would likely be the last."--BOOK COVER.

Book Description
Called the King of the Pulps, Frederick Schiller Faust, aka Max Brand, wrote nearly 400 Westerns from The Untamed to Destry Rides Again--a total of more than 220 books in this genre. Yet Max Brand also created Dr. Kildare (of books, films, and television) and wrote under twenty-one pseudonyms, in another dozen genres. This book removes the mask, with deeply personal memoirs from family, friends and fellow writers, taking us through his orphaned boyhood on the brutal ranches of California, his frustrating decades in Italy, as both a classical poet and a fast-action pulpist, to his heroic death as a war correspondent on the World War II battlefields. Faust's life story is augmented by a complete bibliography of his work--over a thousand books, stories, and films--plus the first listing of works about Faust.
