Among both male and female young urban professionals in Nairobi, sexuality is a key to achieving a 'modern' identity. These young men and women see themselves as the avant garde of a new Africa, while they also express the recurring worry of how to combine an 'African' identity with the new lifestyles with which they are experimenting. Through interviews and three years of ethnographic research at an LGBTQ youth drop-in center, Mary Robertson focuses on the voices and stories of youths themselves in order to show how young people understand their sexual and gender identities, their interest in queer media, and the role that family plays in their lives. The young people who participated in this research are among the first generation to embrace queer identities as children and adolescents. Sexual Deceit is an extended ethical analysis of the phenomenon of sexual identity passing — i.e. socially presenting as X, when one understands oneself as Y, where the variables represent any contemporary sexual identity — alongside identity passing in the contexts of race, gender, and briefly, religion and class.
