Book Description
During the Second World War, there were many battles fought and won. Most were fought with weapons and soldiers. Others were fought with intelligence and schemes. The Allied Intelligence Bureau takes you inside the intelligence group that pulled together American, British, Australian and Dutch agencies in order to fight a more subtle war with the enemy. Wars are won with more than just strength and might. They also need to take intelligence gathered from well-placed spies in order to bring victory to those on the battlefield as well as those working behind enemy lines.

Book Description
The Secret War Against Japan, by Colonel Allison W. Ind of the United States Army, is the dramatic accounting of the principal activities of the AIB - the Allied Intelligence Bureau - a group of British, Australian, Dutch, and American clandestine services formed in June 1942 during World War II. The AIB performed roughly the same functions as the Office of Strategic Services (OSS, predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency). The AIB was under the command of Australian Colonel C.G. Roberts who reported directly to Major-General Charles A. Willoughby, General Douglas MacArthur's Chief Intelligence Officer for the South West Pacific area (SWPA). Author Ind served as Deputy Controller for the organization. Post-war, the AIB was disbanded and Ind served as a senior staff member on MacArthur's post-war occupation force in Japan. This edition features a new Preface by Steve Chadde and is illustrated with maps and photographs.

Book Description
The intriguing and daring story of the Australian coast-watchers in New Britain and the Solomon Islands during World War II is fairly well known, but they were part of a wider organisation. The Allied Intelligence Bureau was General MacArthur's intelligence, special operations and field propaganda unit in the Pacific War, 1942-45. The AIB was unique in its multinational composition. Under American leadership, it included British, Dutch, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian members, although many of the leaders and most of the field operatives were Australian. Its area of operations stretched from New Guinea to the Solomon Islands and from Indonesia, including Borneo, to the Asian mainland. Using much newly released, formerly secret archival material from Britain, the USA and Australia, this new full-scale study of the AIB examines for the first time relations between operatives and native peoples - a relationship critical for the success or failure of missions that were often appallingly dangerous. It also lays bare the power struggles within the organisation itself - conflicts over national, military and personal interests that were constant and intense - heightened by the conduct of war at a time that was, without doubt, the most desperate in Australian history.

Excerpt: The Special Activities Division (SAD) is a division in the United States Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) National Clandestine Service (NCS) responsible for covert operations known as "special activities." Within SAD there are two separate groups, one for tactical paramilitary operations and another for covert political action. The Political Action Group within SAD is responsible for covert activities related to political influence, psychological operations and economic warfare. The rapid development of technology has added cyberwarfare to their mission. Tactical units within SAD are also capable of carrying out covert political action. A large covert operation usually has components that involve many, or all, of these categories, as well as paramilitary operations. Special Operations Group (SOG) is the department within SAD responsible for operations which include the collection of intelligence in hostile countries and regions, and all high threat military or intelligence operations with which the U.S. government does not wish to be overtly associated. As such, members of the unit (called Paramilitary Operations Officers and Specialized Skills Officers) normally do not carry any objects or clothing (e.g., military uniforms) that would associate them with the United States government. If they are compromised during a mission, the government of...
