Book Description
In linguistics, one of the main areas of modern research involves the capabilities and possibilities of there being a "lingua cosmica," a LINCOS, a universal language that could be used to communicate with non-human intelligences. This book touches on the area of the development and use of a "lingua universalis" for interstellar communication, but it also presents concepts that cover a broad area of linguistics. Chomsky's paradigm on universal properties of natural languages, for a long time a leading general theory of natural languages, includes the strong assumption that humans are born with some kind of universals stored in their brains. Are there universals of this kind of language used by intelligent beings and societies elsewhere in the universe? We do not know whether such languages exist. It seems to be impossible to determine, simply because the universe is too large for an exhaustive search. Even verification will be hard to obtain, without quite a bit of luck. This book uses astrolinguistic principles in message construction and is helpful in clarifying and giving perspective to discussions on existential questions such as these.

Book Description
This book fills a serious gap by providing a conceptual framework for understanding the digital world. This world contains large, heterogeneous systems that have to manage dynamic behavior as well as static items and data. Obviously, new, digital methods are needed to deal with the challenges of the digital world. This book introduces such a method with Heraklit, an intuitively simple, albeit powerful framework for modeling, communicating, and analyzing computer-integrated systems. It integrates proven methods for composing modules, describing behavior with local cause and effect, and digitally representing real- and imagined-world items, resulting in a comprehensive, expressive, concerted, technically simple, digital modeling method. This book is structured according to three Heraklit pillars, starting in Part I with the central Heraklit concept of modules, in particular their composition and refinement. Part II covers the second pillar of Heraklit, dynamics, focusing on modules that describe aspects of behavior. Part III focuses on static aspects. In particular, real- and imagined-world items and their symbolic representation are carefully distinguished and related. Together, these three pillars are consolidated in Part IV, integrating all concepts into a powerful formal framework. The book concludes in Part V with a more comprehensive case study of a typical retail business, recommendations on how to start modeling with Heraklit, and useful graphical conventions for the graphical representation of Heraklit models. Heraklit covers the range from the first informal structuring ideas for a computer-integrated system, through the specification of (business) processes, the contributions of people, organizations, and mechanical devices, up to the construction of software. The book is therefore written for students in areas related to system modeling, system design, and system engineering, as well as for professionals in these fields.

Book Description
Sometimes, love is found in the most unexpected places. Sometimes, two people find each other across a crowded room. Sometimes, love conquers all. But only sometimes... Ellie Holmgren is no stranger to tragedy. Her only child, eight-year-old Jamie, died during a tonsillectomy, and while Ellie was trying to find a way to dig herself out of her profound grief, her husband divorced her. And now her sister, Alice, has called to tell her that Morty, Alice's husband, has killed himself. Ellie can only think, "What next?" The question of "What next?" is answered when Ellie reaches Alice's home and learns that Morty didn't actually kill himself -- Alice pulled the trigger. She confesses to Ellie that after suffering years of abuse, she had finally had enough. Alice is considerably older than Ellie, and the two have never been particularly close, but the possibility that Alice could be tried for murder shocks Ellie into action. She arranges the body to look like a suicide and then calls the police. One of the homicide detectives who shows up to investigate is Teo Domingos, an angry, battle-scarred Vietnam vet. He takes one look at Morty's body, observes the way Ellie and Alice cling to each other, and decides it couldn't have been a suicide, that Alice probably did it. His partner overrules him, whereupon Teo loses his famous temper one time too many and is placed on disability. Restless, edgy, but sure of his instincts, Teo takes it upon himself to look into Morty's death on his own. As the pieces fall together, things become even more complicated, and the lives of Teo, Ellie, and Alice connect, intertwine, and unravel to reveal well-kept secrets and lies. As Teo digs deeper, his relationship with Ellie goes from professional to personal, and he finds himself falling in love. Love is something Teo hasn't bargained for. It opens up doors that have been closed for years. It forces him to deal with his own messed-up but genuinely loving family and to face his own deepest feelings and fears. Ellie, too, undergoes her own reawakening when Alice convinces Ellie to go with her to the family ranch, where she ultimately reveals not one, but two shocking secrets... Weighing the ties of love that make and break a family, The End of Marriage is irresistibly touching, funny, and true.

Book Description
From USA TODAY and internationally bestselling author Genevieve Graham comes a gripping World War II novel about two sisters who join the war effort—one as a codebreaker and the other as a pilot—and the secrets that threaten to tear them apart. Perfect for fans of The Rose Code and The Nightingale. Twin sisters Dot and Dash Wilson share many things, and while they are practically inseparable, they are nothing alike. Dot is fascinated by books, puzzles, and Morse code, a language taught to both girls by their father, a WWI veteran. Dash’s days are filled with fixing engines, dancing with friends, and dreaming of flying airplanes. Almost always at their side is their best friend Gus—until war breaks out and he enlists in the army, deploying to an unknown front. Determined to do their duty, both girls join the WRENS, Dash as a mechanic and Dot as a typist. Before long, Dot’s fixation on patterns and numbers takes her from HMCS Coverdale, a covert listening and codebreaking station working with Bletchley Park in England, to Camp X, a top-secret spy school. But when personal tragedy strikes the family, Dot’s oath of secrecy causes a rift between the sisters. Eager to leave her pain behind, Dash jumps at the opportunity to train as a pilot with the Air Transport Auxiliary, where she risks her life to ferry aircraft and troops across the battlefields of Europe. Meanwhile Dot is drawn into the Allies’ preparations for D-Day. But Dot’s loyalties are put to the test once more when someone close to her goes missing in Nazi-occupied territory. With everyone’s eyes on Operation Overlord, Dot must use every skill at her disposal to save those she loves before it’s too late. Inspired by the real-life stories of women in World War II, The Secret Keeper is an extraordinary novel about the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood and the light of courage during the darkest of nights.

Book Description
In Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [1865], young Alice falls down a rabbit hole into an underground fantasy world inhabited by unforgettable, anthropomorphic characters: the White Rabbit, the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, the Mad Hatter, the grinning Cheshire Cat, the pompous Queen of Hearts. With great inventiveness, Carroll plays clever and joyful games with the logic and vibrant characters of his story, making it one of the most essential, beloved and influential works of English literature. This edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland also includes its equally imaginative sequel, Through the Looking-Glass. Both works feature the classic, original illustrations by John Tenniel. LEWIS CARROLL, the pseudonym for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson - born in 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, and died in 1898 in Guildford, Surrey - was a British author, mathematician, and logician.
