Book Description
The Mainland is the second book released from the Sugar City Archives § and also the second part of the trilogy Alba Lands. In it, the citizens of Island Cigam who managed to escape to the Mainland now have tougher obstacles to deal with both physically and mentally. As with the Forgotten Winter - the Mainland is narrated by a native and told through the journals of a boy from Earth. Written mainly in English, some parts are a composition of Scots (mostly Lallans) - a dying, Anglic language of Scotland - constructed with slang, dialects and other forgotten tongues of the land. While understanding the Scots is not inherent to the story a translation link is provided should you require. But if you know as little as Alba then you can experience his plight. The intended way to read the series is with background musical accompaniment (mostly instrumental: Electronic & Classical). This is not for everyone of course, but if you wish then find the recommended track and link before each chapter (via YouTube). If the exact track is missing you can use something similar. For both musical and visual accompaniment visit Zomgbat.Wordpress.com (Original tracks & artwork to follow)You may be hitherto thinking that this is not the story or genre for you. If so, remember that so much more is possible than you can't even imagine. For example, there are already more stars in the observable universe than grains of sand on Earth. Or that a certain species of jellyfish is immortal. Our world is so tiny, and there are such powerful things beyond it.

Transforming Peasants, Property and Power
Author: Constantin Iordachi
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 6155211728
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 552
Book Description
The subject matter of the volume is part of larger research agenda on the process of land collectivization in the former communist camp, focusing on state, identity and property. The main innovation of the volume is to apply recent interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the collectivization process, asking what types of new peasant-state relations it formed and how it transformed notions of self, persons, and things (such as land). The project conceived of changes in the system of ownership as causing changes in the identity and attitude of people; similarly, it regarded the study of personal identities as essential for understanding changes in the system of ownership. This perspective is rare in the area-studies approaches to the topic.

The Farm Bill
Author: Daniel Imhoff
Publisher: Island Press
ISBN: 1610919742
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 282
Book Description
The farm bill is one of the most important pieces of legislation the American president signs. Negotiated every five to seven years, it has tremendous implications for food production, nutrition assistance, habitat conservation, international trade, and much more. Yet at nearly 1,000 pages, it is difficult to understand for policymakers, let alone citizens. In this primer, Dan Imhoff and Christina Badaracco translate all the “legalese" and political jargon into an accessible, graphics-rich 200 pages. Readers will learn the basic elements of the bill, its origins and history, and perhaps most importantly, the battles that will determine the direction of food policy in the coming years. The authors trace how the legislation has evolved, from its first incarnation during the Great Depression, to today, when America has become the world’s leading agricultural powerhouse. They explain the three main components of the bill—farm subsidies, food stamps or SNAP, and conservation programs—as well as how crucial public policies are changing. With a new farm bill just signed into law, we all need to understand the implications of food policy. What’s the impact of crop insurance? How does SNAP actually work? What would it take to create a healthier, more sustainable food system? These are questions that affect not only farmers, but everyone who eats. If you care about the answers, The Farm Bill is your guide.
