This is a report of an occupational survey of the AFSC lA5Xl, Airborne Computer Systems, career ladder conducted by the Occupational Analysis Flight, Air Force Occupational Measurement Squadron (AFOMS). This survey will provide current data for use in updating career ladder documents and training programs. AFSC lA5Xl personnel were last surveyed in 1989 (then AFSC 118X0). This career ladder is scheduled to merge with Airborne Radar Systems (AFSC lA5X3) in late 1995. Background According to AFMAN 36-2108 Specialty Descriptions, 3- and 5-skill level members are responsible for inspecting, operating, and troubleshooting airborne computer equipment. These duties include processing, displaying, and testing systems. They also perform preflight and postflight inspections on airborne computer, display, and ancillary equipment and systems. Seven-skill level personnel perform the same technical tasks as the 3- and 5-skill level members. They are also responsible for supervising airborne computer and display systems activities, performing preflight and postflight inspections on airborne computer display and ancillary equipment, and instructing airborne computer systems maintenance personnel in operation, maintenance, repair, and test procedures. Prior to being awarded the 1A531 AFSC, entrants must complete four formal training courses conducted at three different locations. (KAR) p. 9.

This survey was completed by the Occupational Analysis Division, USAF Occupational Measurement Center, in April 1989. The present survey was requested by HQ TAC/DOY, Langley AFB VA, to secure job and task data to be used in support of Specialty Training Standard (STS), Plan of Instruction (POI), Career Development Course, and Specialty Knowledge Test development, future programming initiatives, and to update other general aspects of the career ladder since the separation of this specialty from the Electronic Computer and Switching Systems specialty (AFSC 305X4) in October 1984.

The 499X specialty, Communications Computer Systems Director, was not included in the job structure analysis which identified 41 separate jobs spread among the 6 remaining specialties. Electronic Computer and Switching Systems personnel install electronic computer and switching systems and missile control communications; assemble, connect, and interwire components of data transmission, processing, and display equipment; perform preventive maintenance; and repair, modify, and inspect electronic computer, switching systems, and missile control communications equipment. Personnel entering the AFSC 2E2X1 career ladder must attend the Electronic Computer and Switching Systems Apprentice course at Keesler AFB MS lasting 67 academic days. Upon completion of this course, the graduate is awarded the 3-skill level. The student may then choose to keep the slick AFSC rating, or attend one of the follow-on shred-awarding courses at Keesler AFB. A-shred personnel maintain Modular Control Equipment (NICE). B-shred personnel maintain airborne computer systems, including the E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). C-shred personnel maintain strategic communications, such as missile control communications. Previously, AFSC 2E2Xl personnel were awarded a D-shred as well, but today that shred is awarded only to Air National (Juard personnel. The training school for the D-shred course is located at Tyndall AFB FL, and focuses on Joint Surveillance Systems maintenance. No D-shred personnel were surveyed; therefore, the D-shred will not be discussed in this report.
