Book Description
Burning coal generates 50% of U.S. electricity and produces air pollution that can pose a threat to human health and ecosystems. The increasing demand for electricity in Texas has led to proposals for 33 new coal-burning, electricity-generating units. The EPA establishes national ambient air quality standards for 6 pollutants to protect public health: carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur oxides, ozone, particulate matter, and lead. This report provides info. on: (1) the current status of permitting coal-burning, electricity-generating units in Central Texas (CT); (2) the process EPA and Texas use to review permit applications for proposed new major sources of air pollution; and (3) what is known about air quality and respiratory health in CT. Book Description
Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations: Current Knowledge, Future Needs discusses the need for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement a new method for estimating the amount of ammonia, nitrous oxide, methane, and other pollutants emitted from livestock and poultry farms, and for determining how these emissions are dispersed in the atmosphere. The committee calls for the EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish a joint council to coordinate and oversee short - and long-term research to estimate emissions from animal feeding operations accurately and to develop mitigation strategies. Their recommendation was for the joint council to focus its efforts first on those pollutants that pose the greatest risk to the environment and public health.
