Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251350140
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
This case study focuses on the Republic of Namibia’s ex ante approach to preventing, controlling, and managing animal pest and disease outbreaks, which are often exacerbated by climate-related disasters, such as floods and droughts. It explores the good practices implemented by Namibia to reduce disaster risks, including: • controlling livestock movement through a zoning strategy and movement permits; • conducting import risk assessments; • disease monitoring and surveillance; • an animal identification and traceability system; • undertaking annual vaccinations; and • contingency plans. The implementation of these measures will: • enable Namibia to more effectively prevent, control and manage animal disease outbreaks so that food security, incomes and livelihoods are secured; • ensure that Namibia’s meat is disease free and meets safety standards in export markets; and • protect public health by preventing the transmission of zoonotic diseases between wildlife and livestock, and then to humans.

Book Description
Although employed, working and living conditions in the agricultural (and domestic) sector prompted Government to appoint the Commission of Inquiry into Labour-related Matters affecting Agricultural and Domestic Employees in the mid-1990s. [...] The Commission found that on a number of socio-economic indicators workers in the freehold and non-freehold farming areas were amongst the poorest employees in the country. [...] No.3, 1996, and the Extension of Security of Tenure Act of 1997 seek to ensure the security of tenure of labour tenants and farm workers by prescribing detailed procedures of eviction. [...] ESP take the empowerment of farm workers to its logical conclusion, in that such schemes aim at enabling farm workers to obtain ownership of part of the equity of the farm on which they work. [...] The improvement of farm workers' lives requires the co-operation of agricultural employers and employees, trade unions and the state and its organs.
