While the rapid progress which is daily being made in aérial navigation necessarily renders any permanent record of the latest achieve ments impossible, yet the epoch when mechan ical flight was demonstrated to the world seems opportune to chronicle the past and present status of the art and to forecast its future. Book Description
Excerpt from Aerial Navigation: A Popular Treatise on the Growth of Air Craft and on Aeronautical Metrology Following the story of the evolution of air ships, a brief account of the medium they navigate has been added. In particular, the circumstances which affect the density and motion of the air have been studied; for the density of the air determines the static lift of air ships; the density and speed of impact of the air together determine the dynamic lift and the resistance to progression; while the velocity of the air current conditions the possible speed of travel in any direction. It is important, therefore, that the aeronau tical student should have some acquaintance with the gen eral properties of the air which affect its density, and some knowledge of the generation and prevalence both of the great currents of the atmosphere, and of the local winds and invisible turmoils which so nearly concern the safety and effective progress of the aerial navigator. The French units of measurement have been freely used, as well as the English. This seems advisable because the official rules and records of international aeronautic events are partly expressed in the metric system. More over, the navigation of a universal medium seems to call for such universal standards. Indeed a peculiar mission of world travel is to eliminate provincialism, and to pro mote universalism of thought, of sentiment, and of custom. In order to lighten the book for the popular reader, some interesting historical facts and much important quantitative data are placed in the Appendices, where they may be available to the technical or special student. Book Description
Excerpt from Travels in Space: A History of Aerial Navigation But with all due deference to the brilliant prescience of Roger Bacon, it is still evident from his own writings, although some of his admirers have sought to prove the contrary, that he did not fully understand the principles of atmospheric pressure, or he would not have thought it necessary to get his hollow globe on the surface of the atmosphere. As to his having some knowledge of the consistency of the air as an elastic fluid, that will not be denied, for at that period the attention of the learned began to be directed to the science of pneumatics. But they had no knowledge whatever of the various and distinct gases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Conquest of the Air: The Romance of Aerial Navigation Then we have a m mler of crank inventors who imagine that they have discovered a way of causing gravity to pull in the other direction, and a still less number who claim to have discovered how flying machines may be worked without any motive power at all. Except by a system of Springs, levers, and pistons, which to their mind gives a kind of an unbalanced pressure which will push the machine either upward or forward as may be desired. All these gentlemen expect courteous replies to their epistles, and I have thought that it would be a good plan to publish a cheap, short, and concise treatise on flying machines and balloons, and then recommend each to purchase and read the work before writing to me a second time. By a perusal of Mr. Alexander's work, I am happy to find the exact treatise that I had in my mind. In this little publication, we have in one hundred and sixty pages the whole history of the subject; in fact everything that is worth knowing, which although written in a short and concise manner is still very attractive, in a word the exact book that is required at the present moment; and I can recommend its careful perusal to everyone who is studying this much-discussed question. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the International Conference on Aerial Navigation: Held in Chicago, August 1, 2, 3 and 4, 1893 The proposal to hold an International Conference on Aerial Navigation in Chicago during the Columbian Exposition first originated with Professor A. F.Zahm, of Ndtre Dame University. He conferred with Mr. C. C. Bonney, President of the World's Congress Auxiliary, an organization under the auspices of the World's Columbian Exposition, intended to promote the meeting of various congresses; then be interested various persons in the project, and in December, 1898, a committee of organization was formed. This committee, in consultation with President Bonney, decided to hold the Conference during the same week as the Engineering Congress, in order to secure the attendance of engineers at the discussions; and the following circular was Issued: Not things, but men. President, Charles C.Bonney. Treasurer, Lyman J.Gage. Vice-President, Thomas B.Bryan. Secretary, Benjamin Bntterworth. The Worlds Congress Auxiliary Of The Worlds Columbian Exposition Of 1893. Department of Engineering. General Division of Aerial Navigation. Preliminary Address Of The Worlds Congress Committee On An International Conference On Aerial Naviga-Tion. In connection with the various congresses which will be held next year, under the auspices of the Worlds Congress Auxiliary, it is proposed to hold in Chicago, in 1893, an Inter national Conference on AeiJal Navigation, somewhat similar to that which took place in Paris during the French Exposition of 1889;the subject being one which, while it has hitherto been left chiefly in the hands of the more imaginative inventors (perhaps in consequence of the prodigious mechanical difficulties which it involves), has of later years attracted the attention of some scientific men and engineers.
