Book Description
Excerpt from Adventures in Search of a Living in Spanish-America In these days of many publications the preface is often little more than an excuse for writing the book. Two of the most common objections to books of travel are that they are either the superficial accounts of people who have been only a short time in the country they describe, or else that they are written from the standpoint of some occupation that does not interest the public at large. As my travels in Spanish-America extended over a period of nearly six years, it may be fairly hoped that the knowledge of some of the places here described is not superficial, and professional work often procured adventures which, if ill-paid in money, were rich in incident. So the profession has been merely used as a thread on which to hang the tale. And if the incidents here described do not altogether correspond with those experienced by others, it does not necessarily follow that any of the writers have deviated from the truth. For a wealthy tourist will see most things from a different aspect to that of a needy foreign resident who is competing for a bare living. The photographs have been selected from those taken during my travels, in the hope that they may convey to the reader a more vivid perception of the subject matter; and if my efforts should be appreciated it is proposed to follow up these adventures by a second volume that treats of the West Indies. Book Description
Excerpt from Up the Forked River: Or, Adventures in South America Two friends were seated in the private office of Rowland Starland, Montgomery Street, San Francisco, not long ago, discussing a subject in which both were much interested. Each gentleman was past three-score, but they were well preserved, of rugged health, well to do and prosperous. They had got on for many years without so much as a shadow of difference between them. They had made the tour of Europe together, had engaged in many an outing and now as the evening of life was drawing on, they took matters with that complacency and comfort which was creditable to their good sense and which was warranted by their circumstances. Book Description
An intimate journey across America, as told by one of its most beloved writers A Penguin Classic In September 1960, John Steinbeck embarked on a journey across America. He felt that he might have lost touch with the country, with its speech, the smell of its grass and trees, its color and quality of light, the pulse of its people. To reassure himself, he set out on a voyage of rediscovery of the American identity, accompanied by a distinguished French poodle named Charley; and riding in a three-quarter-ton pickup truck named Rocinante. His course took him through almost forty states: northward from Long Island to Maine; through the Midwest to Chicago; onward by way of Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana (with which he fell in love), and Idaho to Seattle, south to San Francisco and his birthplace, Salinas; eastward through the Mojave, New Mexico, Arizona, to the vast hospitality of Texas, to New Orleans and a shocking drama of desegregation; finally, on the last leg, through Alabama, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey to New York. Travels with Charley in Search of America is an intimate look at one of America's most beloved writers in the later years of his life—a self-portrait of a man who never wrote an explicit autobiography. Written during a time of upheaval and racial tension in the South—which Steinbeck witnessed firsthand—Travels with Charley is a stunning evocation of America on the eve of a tumultuous decade. This Penguin Classics edition includes an introduction by Jay Parini. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Las Casas: "The Apostle of the Indies" He had certainly great advantages: he lived in most stirring times; he was associated with the greatest personages of his day; and he had the privilege of taking part in the discovery and colonization of a new world. Eloquent, devoted, charitable, fervent, some times too fervent, yet very skilful in managing men, he will doubtless remind the reader of his prototype, Saint Paul; and it was very fitting that he should have been called, as he was, the Apostle of the Indies. Book Description
Excerpt from Jack North's Treasure Hunt: Or Daring Adventures in South America "Where are you going, Jack?" "To the shops of John Fowler & Company." "To look for a job?" "Yes." "Then you are in luck, for I heard this morning that they want another striker in the lower shop at once." "Then I'll strike for the opening at once, and my name is not Jack North if I don't land it." "It will be John Slowshanks when you do get it, mind me!" cried out another voice, from an alleyway near at hand, and before Jack North or his companion could recover from their surprise the speaker, a tall, awkward youth of twenty, sped up the street at the top of his speed.
