Book Description
This book provides a single comprehensive resource that reviews many of the current aircraft flight control programmes from the perspective of experienced practitioners directly involved in the projects. Each chapter discusses a specific aircraft flight programme covering the control system design considerations, control law architecture, simulation and analysis, flight test optimization and handling qualities evaluations. The programmes described have widely exploited modern interdisciplinary tools and techniques and the discussions include extensive flight test results. Many important `lessons learned' are included from the experience gained when design methods and requirements were tested and optimized in actual flight demonstration.

Book Description
There has been considerable activity during the past 8 years to upgrade the military flying qualities specifications for conventional aircraft, as well as for V/STOLs and helicopters. The primary objectives of these upgrades has been to account for the use of high gain, high authority augmentation, and to more directly reflect the requirements of the intended mission into the specifications. The methodologies developed to accomplish the latter objective is summarized in the first part of this lecture. This is followed by a brief overview of the Lower Order Equivalent Systems and Bandwidth criteria. Problems with the specification of control sensitivity, and potential solutions are then discussed, followed by a brief presentation of the use of time vs frequency domain criteria. An empirical method to combine the Cooper-Harper Handling Qualities Ratings (HQRs) from each axis of control into an overall rating is then presented. Finally a proposed specification for precision flare and landing is given, followed by an example application of the method. (SDW).

Book Description
A study was conducted to design an experimental flight test program for the Total In-Flight Simulator CTIFS) directed toward the interface between flying qualities requirements and flight control system design criteria. The eventual goal is to provide an interpretation or translation of flying qualities requirements for use by the flight control system designer. Specifically, an angle of attack and pitch rate command system matrix involving both short term and long term dynamics are specified for evaluation. A major objective of the research was to demonstrate that flying qualities criteria and flight control system configuration or architecture can be independent. Finally, additional configurations are proposed to evaluate the efficacy of dynamic decoupling.

Book Description
Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Book Description
From the first airplanes that flew for just minutes at a time to today's advanced aircraft, flying qualities have depended on airplane stability and control. This book offers an informal history of the personalities and events surrounding the development of airplane stability and control, both the science and its application to design. The authors, widely known for their contributions to airplane design and development, are especially well positioned to write such a history. Much of the content captures never-before-available impressions of those active in the field, from airplane and glider builders before the Wright brothers right up to the present. Chapters are arranged thematically, dealing with a single subject over its entire history. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs and figures and includes a core bibliography, along with brief biographies of noted stability and control figures. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in aerodynamics and aeronautical engineering.
