Book Description
Excerpt from An Address, Delivered Before the Dutchess Medical Society, at Their Annual Meeting in November 1819 The subject to which your attention is di orected, is a retrospective view of the diseases of our county for ten years past. I beg you would forget the abilities necessary to execute this task with propriety, and listen with can dour to the efforts of a member, whose regard for this Society was his principal qualification that entitled him to your choice. In progressing with this review, it is not to be expected we should detain you to notice and investigate the occasional and incidental diseases that are the occurrence of every day and every year, under almost all circumstan ces; but will aim, with impartial faithfulness, to trace the progress of the train of epidemical and endemial excitement, and notice the pro minent features of diseases as they have arisen and affected the human system, and point out a general outline of the method that proved most successful in the cure. Permit me to claim much indulgence for selecting this sub jcet, which is approached with diflidence; for, independent of the want of qualification to do justice in so extensive and important a field of inquiry, the nature of it is such, that, to give it something near a fair and full consideration, will trespass more upon your time than the Society probably had expected, and more than I could have wished. But when it is recol lected, that it is an investigation of health and disease - that the theme before us is a consi deration of the preservation of life, or its ter mination in death, - it is trusted this respected audience will yield indulgence patiently to hear us through. Book Description
Excerpt from The President's Address Delivered Before the Association of American Physicians, at Its Eleventh Annual Meeting at Washington, D. C., April 30, 1896 The normal vital processes depend on two pow ers, the cells and the blood. The very structure and function of the former are acted upon or built up by the latter. Thusit appears as our master Virchow has lately pointed out, that finally we return to a species of humoral pathology, but not indeed to the crases and dia theses of old. For modern humoral pathology looks for the presence in the blood of actual agents mostly of chemical nature. Part of them has been shown to be so; in the case of others we have to rely on inferences. Still, with peptones, aceton, sugar, with acetic, lactic, oxalic, uric, and oxybutyric acids in the blood we are fairly ac quainted; and the discovery of Fraenkel's thy reo-antitoxin proves to what extent the action of the organic juices is mainly, if not altogether chemical. The interests of the practitioner and his patients, of medical science and the commonwealth, are equally served by these views when tested by practice. As an Association we have to deal with the interests of science and of the community; of the latter even more than it is willing to under stand or to admit. We, however, need not be exhorted to continue our work. The misunder stood sympathy with the alleged sufferings of ani mals, and the agitations of the anti-vivisectionists - no matter whether merely misinformed or fanat ical - must not swerve us from studying, from learning, and from serving mankind by combining our efforts for public purposes. The hygienic in terests of the community are, or ought to be, in our keeping. Your Association being the scientific representative of internal medicine in America, ought to be recognized all over the Union as the scientific law-giver. What the New York Acad emy of Medicine is calculated to become for New York City, this Association ought to be able to be for the Union and beyond it through the scientific labors of its members. In order, however, to at tain this destiny, let us not forget that medicine must be one and inseparable, now and forever. Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Address Before the San Francisco Medical Society: Delivered December 21st, 1874 I propose to make a few observations on the present occa sion, in reference to a pursuit which is Operating extensively on the bodies and minds of individuals in America and in Europe, and which can not be ignored in the contemplation of hygienic influences. I allude to what is called Spiritual ism, and which I prefer to call Spiritism, and I shall en quire whether the practices connected with this subject are not inimical to the bodily and mental organization. In the first place, look at what is called a seance. A. Number of individuals sit around a table, with their hands resting on it. They expect or desire to witness some extra ordinary phenomenon, having relation to departed friends. Their minds are solemnized by the nature of the occasion, and indeed the direction of their thoughts towards another world is considered essential in some' degree to the success of the experiment. In this state of anticipation and sus pense they sit for an hour - sometimes for two hours or even longer. It is evening - it is night - it is midnight. It is the hour when nature calls for sleep. There they sit, transfixed almost as statues, in solemn silence, in breathless expecta tion, in anxious anticipation, the reason in abeyance and the imagination wrought up to the highest pitch of excitement. Will any sane man or woman assert that all this is compati ble with the normal and healthful action of the brain and nervous system?
