The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. Car friendly policies of recent times and affordable manufacturing technologies readily supported suburban development where people live outside the municipal boundaries and cultivate "commuter culture". The consequences of these historical developments include: degradation of communities and environments, unhealthy lifestyles, increased demographic segregation, traffic congestion, and climate change, among others. Encouragingly, ridership of public transportation in America has been on the rise over the last decade but it is not yet robust enough to accommodate passengers who do not own cars. Contemporary transit, with the addition of public bike share systems and private ride share companies like Uber, is having a profound impact on how we build cities. It is still unclear how contemporary transit systems, when combined with future systems, will fit into the future American city and culture. This thesis will focus on future TOD development of Charlotte, NC as it relates to the relationship of transit options and the corresponding public space. Specifically, the thesis will investigate a single proposed transit station at 36th Street and North Davidson Street in a Neighborhood of Charlotte known as NoDa. The station is part of Charlotte's "LYNX Blue Line" light rail which is currently under construction. This thesis will draw from the positive aspects which can be translated from the informal Indian City condition: less-formal transit networks (Auto Rickshaw - Self Driving Google Car) linked into larger formal infrastructure (LYNX Blue Line) and adaptable building typologies. In all systems, an intimate relationship with people and public space are used to increase adaptability and reduce the need for car ownership. The effectiveness of the network will be quantified by the impact it has on culture, communities, and the built environment rather than the volume and speed of passengers it can accommodate.
