Book Description
This report concerns specific investigation undertaken to assess the role of the surface oxide layer in the generation of acoustic pulses in metals, i.e., acoustic emission. Experiments were conducted on single crystals of aluminum of different crystallographic orientation. The specimens were pulled in tension both in atmosphere and exposed to etchant solutions. Results demonstrated the oxide layer is not itself an emission source and that the emission characteristics are significantly modified as a result of the influence of the oxide on the deformation behavior of the specimens. Specific observations suggest the operative mechanism of emission generation and the importance of the role played by the surface condition in the deformation of metals.

Book Description
Acoustic emission was monitored during plastic deformation under dead-weight tensile loading of polycrystalline aluminum, brass, copper, and steel. The acoustic emission data, both threshold-type and frequency-analysis type, were correlated with yield strength, stored elastic energy, strain hardening parameters, loading histories, diffusion processes, slip band motion and mosaic cell size. Major results are presented under the headings discontinuous yielding (Portevin--Le Chatelier Effect), parabolic strain hardening, and frequency analysis. The principal experimental techniques are also summarized. (auth).

Book Description
Acoustic emission is a transient elastic wave generated by the rapid release of energy within a material. A wide variety of mechanisms have been proposed as possible sources of acoustic emission. Proposed mechanisms have included crack propagation, precipitate fracture, twin formation, martensite formation, dislocation motion and/or multiplication. This paper is concerned with acoustic emission generated by dislocation mechanisms operating during plastic deformation. Twinning and martensitic phase transformations are excluded even though dislocation motion is involved in the nucleation and growth of twins and the growth of martensite.

Book Description
Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most important non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for materials, constructions and machines. Acoustic emission is defined as the transient elastic energy that is spontaneously released when materials undergo deformation, fracture, or both. This interdisciplinary book consists of 17 chapters, which widely discuss the most important applications of AE method as machinery and civil structures condition assessment, fatigue and fracture materials research, detection of material defects and deformations, diagnostics of cutting tools and machine cutting process, monitoring of stress and ageing in materials, research, chemical reactions and phase transitions research, and earthquake prediction.

Book Description
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) inspection schemes are important in design, manufacturing, and maintenance. By correctly applying techniques of NDE, we can reduce machine and system failures and increase reliability of operating systems over an extended lifetime. Nondestructive Evaluation: A Tool in Design, Manufacturing, and Service introduces and discusses primary techniques used in the field, including ultrasonics, acoustic emission, magnetics, radiography, penetrants, and eddy currents. Examples of each of these techniques are included, demonstrating typical applications.

Book Description
The goal of this investigation was to characterize and correlate the acoustic emission measured during deformation with the responsible deformation mechanisms. Two separate and distinct classes of materials have been investigated. The materials were chosen for the important fundamental information they could provide concerning the relationship between acoustic emission and the parameters involved and because of their practical importance to Air Force programs and objectives. The materials investigated were: one, a selection of precipitation strengthened metals and alloys, and two, a selection of metals and alloys having a hexagonal close packed structure. For both classes of materials the acoustic emission has measured during deformation for different metallurgical and testing parameters. The data have been analyzed and models and/or deformation mechanisms responsible for the measured emission have been identified.
