Book Description
Neuro-ophthalmology is a field of medicine that touches on every subspecialty in neurology, but has an undeserved reputation as a branch of knowledge that is difficult to learn and practice. Many neurologists and ophthalmologists do not receive sufficient exposure to neuro-ophthalmology during their residencies, and are uncomfortable diagnosing and treating patients with neuro-ophthalmic problems. Authored by neuro-ophthalmologists whose careers span three generations in the field, Neuro-Ophthalmology helps clinicians evaluate and manage patients with neuro-ophthalmic problems. This "curb-side consult" approach is divided into five sections: afferent (visual) disorders; efferent (eye movement) disorders; eyelid disorders; pupil disorders; and combination syndromes. Based on the most current scholarly evidence and filled with practical advice, Neuro-Ophthalmology provides the answers to "what do I do now?"

Book Description
A Certain Kind of Wisdom In Plato’s Apology, the Greek philosopher Socrates is on trial to defend himself against the allegation of corrupting the youth of Athens. Socrates denies this charge and offers an alternate reason for why he is on trial. He explains, “[w]hat has caused my reputation is none other than a certain kind of wisdom. What kind of wisdom? Human wisdom, perhaps(1). ” He proceeds to tell the story of his friend Chaerophon, who once asked the Oracle at Delphi whether there was anyone wiser than Socrates. The Oracle answered that there was not. Socrates did not agree and thought that he would try to prove the Oracle wrong. And so he set about seeking out Athenians with a reputation for wisdom in various regards in order to test their claims to knowledge through questioning. He discovered many with false claims to knowledge and none with genuine wisdom and ultimately concluded that he was the wisest. He reached this conclusion not because of any special knowledge he possessed that others did not, but rather because he recognized his own lack of knowledge and strived to learn more, while others thought that they were kno- edgeable but were not. Socrates’ conclusion that there is wisdom in recognizing the limitations of accepted knowledge represents the motivation for this book.

Book Description
This volume covers the latest findings on the molecular mechanism and therapeutics of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), including important research on 1) pathological characteristics and epidemiology of ALS, 2) selective vulnerability of spinal motor neurons, 3) genetic abnormality of ALS and neurotrophin, 4) mechanism of motor neuron death and glutamate toxicity, 5) motor axon, axonal transport, neurofilament, and glycation, 6) basic therapeutic approach, and 7) clinical therapeutic approach. The surprising discovery of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) gene mutations in a part of familial ALS in 1993 has had a strong impact on all neuroscientists and clinicians dealing with this disease. This volume aims to help them to progress their future basic and clinical investigations, and to enhance strong scientific collaboration in elucidating the molecular mechanism and discovering the essential therapeutics of the disease.
