Book Description
Excerpt from American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists Journal, Vol. 16: Florida and Louisiana Division; June, 1996 In Louisiana, a sugarcane crop cycle usually consists of a fall-planted cr0p (plant-cane), which grows very little during winter and is harvested about 1 year after planting, and two ratoon crops. The region has a 7 to 9-month growing season that extends from early spring to late November or until harvest during the period from early October to late December. Consequently, sugarcane is relatively immature at the beginning of harvest and sucrose levels are usually low, generally increasing as the harvest season advances, depending on cultivar. Sucrose levels in juice and sugar yield are affected greatly by cultivar and by the growing season before and during harvest. A combination of high incidentlight, cool night temperatures, and drying soil prior to and during the harvest period retards vegetative growth and promotes sucrose accumulation (natural ripening) (legendre.
