Shoghi Effendi This two-volume series on pilgrims who visited 'Abdu'l-Bahá in the Holy Land may be seen as a companion to 'Abdu'l-Bahá in Their Midst, about 'Abdu'l-Bahá's three-year journey (1910-1913) to Egypt, Europe and North America. The present volume covers the time from 1897 until the Master's departure on His journey to the West, while the second volume begins with His return to Haifa at the end of 1913 and covers the time until His passing in 1921. Virtually all pilgrims and many other visitors wrote down what 'Abdu'l-Bahá said, including many of His talks, both formal and informal. Their accounts provide a great wealth of stories that help illustrate who 'Abdu'l-Bahá was in the context of history and how he taught and interacted with others. Most of these accounts come from personal diaries and letters initially written in longhand, though many were later typed. More importantly, by exploring the visits through the motives of those that received him, The Reception of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in Britain: East Comes West demonstrates that the “cultic milieu” thesis is incomplete. Focusing on a number of well-known Edwardian Protestant reformers, the book demonstrates that the arrival of eastern forms of religions in Britain penetrated more mainstream Christian forms. This process is set within significant developments in the early formation of the study of religions, the rise of science and orientalism. All these elements are shown to be linked together. There were six Western believers in Haifa on the night of the ascension of 'Abdu'l-Bahá: Mr. John Bosch and Mrs. Louise Stapfer Bosch from Geyserville, California; Dr. Florian Krug and Mrs. Grace Krug from New York, and Fraulein Johanna Hauff from Stuttgart. All of them were there as pilgrims. The only other Western believer present in Haifa was Mr. Curtis Kelsey from New York, who was in Haifa to install electrical power plants to light the shrines of the Báb and Bahá'u'lláh. This book tells the story of these believers, how they became Bahá'ís, the circumstances that led them to Haifa, and how their experience at the time of the ascension of 'Abdu'l-Bahá shaped their path of service to the Cause of God.
