The method adopted has been to select from the name of the organization the word or words de scriptive of the trade, or, in the case of a federation, the part of its name ordinarily regarded as indicative of its function. Thus the Journeymen Bakers and Confectioners' Inter national Union has been inserted as Bakers and Confec tioners' International Union, Journeymen, and the Ameri can Federation oi Labor as Federation of Labor, Ameri can. Wherever an organization has changed its name dur ing its existence, the publications have been classified under separate headings corresponding to the different names, and cross-references have been used to indicate the substantial unity of the different organizations. The chief classes of publications issued by American trade unions and federations are (i) constitutions (2) reports of convention proceedings; (3) official journals; (4) other documents, such as scales of prices, proceedings of confer emees for collective bargaining, etc. The publications have been arranged under each trade-union in the order thus indicated. It was believed the membership would welcome a publication that would give in as concise form as possible' every important proposition acted on by all the conventions. To that end the many questions considered in the thirty-eight sessions of the Federation have been compiled and published in encyclopedia form. This has developed a ready reference book that will be of greatest assistance not only to the officers and members but to all who seek to know the principles upon which our trade union movement is founded and the wonderful successes achieved. Those who desire information in detail can readily refer to the proceedings, as the work is also a bibliography. While each subject is briefly treated the intention has been not to omit anything that would prevent a thorough understanding of every principle. When it is known there are words in the thirty-eight proceedings. That had to be reduced to about it will be seen the work has been dif ficult. The rule followed was to use the official language of the conventions. The belief was that it should be an American Federation of Labor book, not the work of any individual or group of individuals. The real authors are the delegates to conventions, extracts from whose resolutions and speeches. Are printed literally but in condensed form. It is the American Federation of Labor officially talking to you as you read, not an individual author Every delegate who presented a proposition, discussed any issue or in any way left the impress of his thoughts on the trade union movement will recognize the result of his work in the book. Excerpt from The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions The primary aim of the present study is to set forth the facts concerning the closed shop. It is proposed, first, to trace the manner in which the closed-shop rule developed among the early trade societies in America, and to disclose the motives which led to its incorporation into trade-union policy. Secondly, the history of the closed-shop movement will be set forth. The relative importance attached to the enforcement of the closed shop at various stages in our industrial development and the efforts which employers have made to check its operation will be shown. Next, the forms of the closed shop as they exist in various unions will be described. This analysis will make clear what the closed shop is and how far exclusion from employment is involved in its working.
