Book Description
Excerpt from The Fourfold Sovereignty of God These four Lectures are intended to complete the outline of the subject of those on the Four Great Evils of the Day. In speaking of the latter, I was constantly aware that the posi tive truths ought to have been first stated, and that the Sovereignty of God must be understood before the Revolt of Man can be measured. These Lectures, like the last, are printed as they were taken down at the time. I let them go with all their faults, believing the truths and prin ciples contained in them to be of vital moment in these days; and hoping that some one with more ability and greater leisure will fill Up the outline I have tried to draw. Book Description
Excerpt from The Freeness and Sovereignty of God's Justifying and Electing Grace Many plain persons, who have not time to read long treatises, or to enter into the intricacies of controversy, entertain doubts upon some of the leading doctrines of the gospel, and suffer those doubts to remain unsatisfied, either because they deem the subject unprofitable, or think they have not time for its investigation. No subject, however, can justly be deemed unprofitable, a right knowledge of which is essential either to our eternal salvation, or to the comfort and consistency of our Christian walk. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sovereignty and Fatherhood of God: A Discourse, Preached During His Visit to England In the Lord's Prayer, the permanent liturgy of the Christian Church, no clause is more pregnant than that which says, "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." At first view, nothing could seem more superfluous than a prayer addressed to a supreme and irresistible Monarch, asking that His own will, which is certain to rule in His dominions, may be done. But when we look a little further, and consider how much is done in the world we occupy which we cannot piously ascribe to the will of a good and holy Being, we feel that, without supposing any infringement of the Divine attributes, we must recognize a permitted resistance to God's will, which constitutes the sin and causes the misery of human life.
