Book Description
The essays in Menacing Virgins: Representing Virginity in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance examine the nexus of religious, political, economic, and aesthetic values that produce the Western European myth of virginity, and explore how those complex cultural forces animate, empower, discipline, disclose, mystify, and menace the virginal body. As the title suggests, the virgin can be seen alternately or even simultaneously as menaced or menacing. To chart the history of virginity as a steady, evolutionary progression from a religious ideal in the Middle Ages toward a more secularized or sovereign ideal in the Renaissance would obscure how unstable a concept chastity is in both periods. What this collection demonstrates is that medieval and early modern attitudes toward virginity are not general and evolutionary, but specific, changeable, and often conflicted.

Book Description
Essays on Violence: Pollution, Sacrifice and Madness is an exploration of the intersecting histories of caste and violence in the Indian context foregrounding ideational and temporal continuities and deep linkages between ideas, processes and events by combing historical sources with ethnographic data. Traversing the diverse and conflicting strands in Indian traditions, it traces the centrality of the idea of violence in discourses on sacrificial violence, self, body, evil and danger and their reverberations in critical moments of Indian history. The discourse on caste violence is unpacked through analysis of concepts like danda, matsyanyaya and vadhoavadha, religious and textual exegesis of negation and demonization and historical sites to locate processes of transitions in cultures of violence via the Telangana armed uprising and imagined cartography of the incipient nation. By drawing attention to the nature of caste violence in postcolonial Andhra, the book offers glimpses into the emergence of contradictory pulls in the forging of caste identities, nationhood and the shifts in the subjectivity of outcastes within the context of repressive political culture of postcolonial democratic experience.

Book Description
Can one of Silicon Valley’s premier software companies be haunted? “Impossible,” says Bobby Race, CEO of the company and a powerful force in the information industry. “Don’t be so sure,” counters Kevin Pierce, a talented but down-at-the-heels portrait artist who knows too well that supernatural life does exist. Kevin has been saddled for ten years with his own personal ghost— Sport Sullivan, a cynical, street-wise gambler murdered in 1920. Desperate to save his company from the embarrassment of a haunting, Bobby Race hires Kevin to rid the company of its ghost under the guise of painting Bobby’s portrait. The ghost appears to be Cynthia Gooding, a company employee who died in a suspicious “accident” at company headquarters. Along the way Kevin becomes involved with two very sharp, quite different career women. Dorothy Lake is an emotionally buttoned down genius programmer who wants Kevin more than she will admit. Jenny Hartson, executive secretary to the CEO, is a health and exercise fanatic who wants to break Kevin of his dependency on Carta Blanca beer. Throw in Izzy Valentine, a gangster trying to buy (or threaten) his way onto Bobby’s board of directors; Big Sam Cody, the best car thief in San Francisco; and Pure John Braggia, a thug with excellent manners. With the help of Sport Sullivan (an ethereal cousin to Dr. Watson), Kevin must walk through a mine field of these dangerous characters to uncover the reason Cynthia Gooding’s ghost is haunting the executive suites of Silicon Valley.

Book Description
Emma Stevens still lives with the guilt of an impossible decision from her past: being forced to choose which of her young siblings to save in the fire that decimated their childhood home. To this day, she’s never stopped thinking about the boy next door who’d dragged her to safety that night. Or the fact that he’d been the one to cause the fire in the first place… Jake Rowan may not have been able to save Emma’s little brother all those years ago, but he was able to save his own brother. By taking the fall for the accidental fire he’d had nothing to do with, and serving out his sentence in juvie, Jake managed to keep his older brother out of prison. At the cost of his own future…and the girl of his dreams. Now, fourteen years later, Jake finds himself on Emma’s doorstep once again. Not to save her life this time, but to repair it—along with her heart—if she’ll let him. Previously published by Montlake Romance (c) 2017.

Book Description
This potent drama, a collected volume of Goytisolo's famed tetralogy following a Catalan family, is widely regarded as one of the most profound inquiries ever undertaken on literary creation. Antagony surveys the social history of Barcelona and Catalonia, primarily since the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939. The work, originally published as a tetralogy and now collected into one volume, follows the youth and education of Raúl Ferrer Gaminde, son of a well-connected, middle-class Catalan family that embraces Franco and Spanish Nationalism. Its potent drama plays out through Goytisolo’s crisp, forceful presentation of youth, humor, optimism, rebellion, violence, sexual awakening, indulgence, punishment, and the realization of one’s artistic vocation. Alternately modern and historical, Antagony displays intelligent realism, emotional gravity, profane beauty, brute vulgarity, sweeping rhetorical scope, and seamless transitions through long, streaming passages of narrative and introspection.

Book Description
Cittàvecchio - the Old City. An Age of Reason, so the Lords of the City say, from behind their elegant masks. Superstition has no place in modern Cittàvecchio; we have moved beyond our dark past. But in the flooded streets and narrow, fogbound alleyways of the old Imperial capital, a past both feared and secretly yearned for may not have given up its grip entirely - as dissent against the Duke spreads through the populace and bloody murders stir up the poor and dispossessed, the city is reminded once more that where there is superstition, there is usually good reason why - and that even in an Age of Reason, there are things in the dark which wait only for an opportunity to crawl once more into the light. As Cittàvecchio's festival week draws closer it becomes more and more obvious that those who plot in secret are themselves being manipulated and manoeuvered - and those doing the maniuplating might seek, not a new government, but a return to a much older one...
