The most interesting of these advances is the authoritative and, it is to be hoped, final determination of the food value of alcohol, which has been treated in more detail than in former editions. The increasing use of cocaine as a local anesthetic, and the introduction of the subarachnoid method of medication required an expansion of the chapter on this drug, and the same may be said of the pages devoted to the adrenal gland. Numerous minor changes have been made to bring the text up to date and several new illustrations have been added.
