Book Description
Excerpt from A d104 Book of Materia Medica, Being an Account of the More Important Crude, Drugs of Vegetable and Animal Origin, Designed for Students of Pharmacy and Medicine The conditions under which this, the third edition, has been prepared, have been somewhat adverse. While it was considered desirable to add brief accounts of a number of drugs in less frequent use, duo regard has had to be given to tho high cost of production. A reduction in the number of pages has been made possible by tho use of a slightly smaller type and by the omission of the classification according to natural orders and of a few of tho illustrations. Notwithstanding this reduction in size, the number of drugs dealt with has been very considerably increased, and numerous notes have been added in order to increase the general utility of tho work. All temperatures are now stated in degrees Centigrade. The present volume, published under the title of a 'd104-Book of Materia Medica, ' constitutes a second edition of the author's 'Introduction to the Study of Materia Medica' which appeared in 1899. This change in title has been rendered desirable by the numerous additions that have been made to the work with tho view of broadening its scope. To this end a chapter on the history and commerce of drugs has boon added. Each section has been prefaced by a short introduction, including, in the section dealing with 'Animals and Animal Glands and Secretions, ' a brief outline of modem zoological classification. For the convenience of advanced students the microscopical characters of, and assay processes for, a number of important drugs have been added. Book Description
Excerpt from Materia Medica of Vegetable and Animal Origin: With Notes on the Properties, Uses, and Constituents of Crude Drugs In preparing this book, the object kept mainly in view has been the production, at a moderate price, of a volume of convenient size, which should contain references to all the more important facts concerning the chief vegetable and animal drugs in common use throughout the British Empire. The vegetable and animal drugs which are dealt with in the volume include the whole of those official in the British Pharmacopoeia (1898) and in Appendix I. to that work, in addition to all those official in the Indian and Colonial Addendum (1900) and a large number of non-official drugs, with the characters and constituents of which persons registered in Great Britain as chemists and druggists are required to be familiar. No other work on drugs covers exactly the same ground, or contains such recent information on many points, and it will be found that, in spite of its small size, the volume contains as exhaustive and accurate descriptions of all important drugs of vegetable and animal origin as works of a more imposing character. Students who may adopt it as a text-book will, therefore, find it unnecessary, as a rule, to consult other text-books on the same subject, while advanced workers should appreciate the advantage of having existing information summarised up to date. Book Description
Excerpt from A d104-Book of Organic Materia Medica, Comprising a Description of the Vegetable and Animal Drugs of the British Other With Other Non-Official Medicines: Arrange Systematically and Especially Designed for the Use of Students The Table of Contents in the present work has been fully and systematically arranged, with the view of bringing before the student at a glance the sources of the various drugs, as well as the orders and higher divisions of the Vegetable and Animal Kingdoms to which the plants and animals yielding them respectively belong, more especially those of vegetable origin, which constitute by far the larger proportion of the articles of the Materia Medica. The Author would therefore recommend that, before commencing the study of the drugs of any particular order, reference should be first made to the Table of Contents, when the position of the order will be seen, the names and number of medicinal plants treated of which it contains, and the parts and products of each which are used in medicine. By studying in this way the student will acquire not only a special knowledge of the several drugs, but also a general acquaintance with the several groups in which they are arranged and classified.
