Transfer and Interference in Language
Author: Monika Brüggemeier
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027237352
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 503
Book Description
The topic of this bibliography in its broadest sense is the subject of a wide range of academic disciplines. Given these circumstances, the particular associations and connotations of the terms 'transfer' and 'interference' in each of these areas are legion, with resultant differences in meaning in the disparate literature on these subjects. And yet it is, in one way or another, contact and interaction of languages in the speaker/hearer and learner, in language acquisition contexts, as well as in society in general, which is basic to these two concepts throughout the various disciplines. The discovery of this basic unitary notion is surely one of the reasons for the new interest in these phenomena. In light of all this, a bibliography cannot at present avoid being highly/ selective in order to demarcate an interdisciplinary area of research in its own right and with its own status. The establishment of such an area is one of our main aims. The focus of interest in this bibliography, admittedly, is directed towards the psycholinguistics of language contact and interaction.

Author: Morton Ann Gernsbacher
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131770844X
Category : Psychology

The Linguistics of Literacy
Author: Pamela A. Downing
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027277184
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
This volume grew out of the Seventeenth Annual University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Linguistics Symposium, which was held in Milwaukee on April 8-10, 1988. The theme of the conference was the relationship between linguistics and literacy. In this volume, a selection of papers are presented which cluster around three of the major themes that developed during the conference: the linguistic differences between written and spoken genres, the relationship between orthographic systems and phonology, and the psychology of orthography. The volume concludes with a solicited paper by Walter J. Ong which draws together the various strands considered in the other sections of the book and addresses the broader question of the social and psychological consequences of literacy.

Experimental Semiotics
Author: Bruno Galantucci
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027273693
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
In the early twentieth century, Ferdinand de Saussure envisioned "a science which studies the role of signs as part of social life". About a century later, a science has emerged that is very much in the spirit of that envisioned by de Saussure. Researchers who are developing this science, which has been labeled Experimental Semiotics, conduct controlled studies in which human adults develop novel communication systems or impose novel structure on systems provided to them. This volume offers a primer to Experimental Semiotics and presents a set of studies conducted within this new discipline. The volume is an ideal text complement for an advanced graduate seminar and it will be of interest to anyone who wonders how humans assemble and develop new ways to communicate with one another. Originally published in Interaction Studies 11:1 (2010).
