"One purpose of this study was to determine the body fat composition levels of physical education department majors at Eastern Washington University in the Fall of 1996. The subjects were tested by the researcher using the Lange skinfold calipers. Literature revealed the Lange calipers to be a reliable instrument when used by an experienced and skilled tester. The tester in this study has had over six years experience and was determined to be skilled by a 0.99 correlation between a test and retest of skinfold scores. Once reliability was established, subjects were tested and then classified into categories of "unhealthy'' and "acceptable". Using the Jackson & Pollock 6-site skinfold formula, 86 % of the physical education majors in this study had "acceptable" body fat percents using the most liberal recommendations stated in the literature. For males these "acceptable" levels are body fat percents ranging from 3 percent to 19 percent body fat, and for females a percent body fat ranging from 12 percent to 26 percent body fat. Fourteen percent of the subjects tested in this study did not meet this standard. For the physical education majors tested in this study, mean values of 11.4 percent body fat and 20.5 percent body fat were found for men and women respectively. It was therefore concluded that a large majority of physical education majors were within the most liberal healthy body fat guidelines recommended widely and on average their body fat percents were lower than the average college age student reported in the literature. A second purpose was to test the validity and reliability of the FITNESSGRAM skinfold body composition testing formula, currently used by Eastern Washington University's Fit-for-Hire program at the time of this study. The FITNESSGRAM formula was compared to the Jackson & Pollock 6-site skinfold formula and the hydrostatic weighing method, two well recognized and accepted methods for determining body fat percent in individuals. Results of the present study indicate that the FITNESSGRAM skinfold testing formula overestimates body fat in both males and females by about 4 and 3 percent respectively. It was concluded that this test, although reliable, is not valid since it consistently overestimates body fat percent"--Document.

While the use of body composition analyzers can become a critical tool in breaking the continual weight loss/weight gain cycle in Americans, the accuracy of these analyzers at measuring body composition remains in question. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of various body composition techniques at determining body fat percentages (%BF). METHODS: Sixty males (mean +/- SD) [age: 21.3 +/- 1.7 yr., height: 178.1 +/- 7.2 cm., mass: 81.9 +/- 12.6 kg., body fat %: 14.6 +/- 7.5 %] and thirty-nine females [age: 20.5 +/- 0.9 yr., height: 166.0 +/- 7.7 cm., mass: 63.5 +/- 11.6 kg., body fat %: 26.6 +/- 6.7%] from a moderately sized, midwestern university participated in the study. Over nine million children 6-17 years old are overweight in the United States. They may face the highest risk ever for overweight, obesity, and associated health problems as adults. This study's purpose was to evaluate adiposity measurement methods in children by comparing accuracy, cost effectiveness, ease of use, and practicality. IRB approval, parental consent and student assent were obtained. Data were collected by trained employees at six elementary schools on 789 subjects for boys (n=39) and girls (n=98) 5-11 years old African American children. Hip and waist circumferences, height, and weight were collected. BMI, Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR), and Waist to Height Ratio (WHTR) were calculated. Upon analysis, weight and hip circumference were correlated (r = .94135) and waist circumference was correlated to BMI (r = .92396). The measures of adiposity were highly correlated indicating that a variety of anthropometric measurements can be used for measuring children.
