The purpose of this researcher's project is the effectiveness of social skills group in elementary school-aged children in a classroom setting. It is hypothesized by the researcher that the social skills group will have a positive effect on the students and improve their social skills in their natural environment as well as in the classroom. The method used for this study will include a group of fifteen students at Valencia Valley Elementary school will attend a special day class for eight weeks for the span of forty-five minutes to an hour learning specific social skills. The researcher will create the curriculum for the students, with a new skill introduced each week for a total of eight weeks. At the conclusion of the group, in-depth interviews will be conducted with the children's teacher and class aides to determine the effect the group had on the children. Research questions concerning the effectiveness of the social skills group will be considered during the interviews.

"The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a social skills group program using pre-post testing and focus groups. Program effectiveness measurement was illustrated using data collected from a pilot parent-child social skills building group program, 'Raising Positive Thinkers'. The group involved four parent-child dyads and ran for three consecutive weeks, meeting once a week for 90 minutes to introduce, practice and review social skills learned. Quantitative data was collected via pre and post questionnaire using the Social Skills Improvement System rating scale (SSIS). Qualitative data was collected from a focus group at the end of the program. Parent perceptions of the social skills group indicated the group was overall a beneficial experience for themselves and their children. The pre and post questionnaire data did not yield significant findings, whereas the focus group gave beneficial information for future replications of the program. The use of both questionnaires and focus group was constructive in giving a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of the program. Parent input was included for future replications of the program."--Abstract.

It is perhaps trite to refer to human beings as social animals, but never theless it is true. A substantial portion of our lives is spent in interactions with other people. Moreover, the nature, quality, and quantity of those interactions have a tremendous impact on behavior, mood, and the adequacy of adjustment. Faulty interpersonal relationship patterns have reliably been associated with a wide variety of behavioral-psychological dysfunctions ranging from simple loneliness to schizophrenia. Most "traditional" analyses of interpersonal failures have viewed them as consequences or by-products of other difficulties, such as anx iety, depression, intrapsychic conflict, or thought disorder. Con sequently, remediational efforts have rarely been directed to interper sonal behavior per se. Rather, it has been expected that interpersonal relationships would improve when the source disorder was eliminated. While this model does account for some interpersonal dysfunctions (e.g., social anxiety can inhibit interpersonal behavior), it is not adequate to account for the vast majority of interpersonal difficulties. In fact, in many cases those difficulties either are independent of or underlie other dysfunctions (e.g., repeated social failure may produce depression or social anxiety).
