Book Description
Excerpt from Sermon Preached Before the Honourable House of Commons, at St. Margaret's Westminster, on Saturday, January 30, 1747-8: Being the Day Appointed to Be Observed as the Day of Martyrdom of King Charles I I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbor; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom. And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof, and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards. And the Egyptians will I give over into the band of cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, faith the Lord, the Lord of Hosts. We know little more of the history of Egypt, at this period of time, than what is here denounced by the Prophet. The Lord gave the Egyptians up unto their own hearts lusts, and let them follow their own imaginations: these, by a natural course of events, produced Civil Dissentions, Weakness in the State, and Extravagancy in Religion; the end of which things was Tyranny.
