Dark as Night
Author: Mark T. Conard
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781643961798
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
Morris White escaped the crime and working-class roots in the Philly projects by learning to cook. He's got great taste and impeccable kitchen skills, and now he's a Sous Chef at a first-rate Philadelphia French bistro. The stove burners aren't the only thing that's on fire in Morris's life, since his affair with Vicky Ward has just heated up. She's the manager at the bistro and comes from money and a privileged background. Together, they're dreaming of opening their own restaurant, where she'll run the front-of-the-house business and he'll run the kitchen. But their dream gets sidetracked when Morris takes in his half-brother, Vince Kammer, who's just been released from prison. Vince did time for a jewelry store robbery that went sideways, and the local mob boss who bankrolled the crime, Johnny "Stacks" Staccardo, is insisting that Vince pull another job to make up for the loss of the jewels he never received. Johnny Stacks has his gangster wannabe henchmen, Lenny and Mo, riding Vince pretty hard, and to make matters worse, Dick Franks, the corrupt cop who originally investigated the jewelry store heist, has gotten wind that Vince is out of the can. Franks believes Vince has the missing diamonds, and there's not much that Franks won't do to get his hands on those stones. When Morris discovers Vince's predicament, he has to summon the inner tough guy from his youth (and dig up a gun he had hidden away), to keep Vince from doing anything stupid. Caught between the gangsters, the vicious Dick Franks, and Vince's own desire for revenge, Morris risks losing his new love, his dreams, even his life in order to save Vince from himself. Praise for DARK AS NIGHT: "Dark as Night is a funny, violent, and damn near perfect noir. If you like your heroes flawed, your villains amoral, and your body count high, you might well think that Mark T. Conard has been reading your mind. A fantastic debut." -Tod Goldberg, author of Living Dead Girl "If you crossed Anthony Bourdain's Bone in the Throat with Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant and threw in a little bit of Carl Hiaasen for good measure you might get something like Mark T. Conard's funny and brutal Dark as Night. He's one to watch." -Scott Phillips, author of The Walkaway

Ted Grant Writings: Volume One – Trotskyism and the Second World War (1938-1942)
Author: Ted Grant
Publisher: Wellred Books
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 492
Book Description
This is the first volume of Ted Grant’s Writings. It covers the period from 1938 to 1942, when he was involved in building up the forces of Trotskyism in Britain. During the early years of the Second World War, Ted became editor of the Socialist Appeal and political secretary of the Workers’ International League. In this role Ted emerged as the principal theoretician of the British Trotskyist movement. His participation in the revolutionary movement was to span a period from 1928, when he was introduced to Marxism, through to his death in 2006. For all those who knew him, he was a truly remarkable and inspiring figure. The articles and documents contained in this first volume of his Writings coincided with the emergence of the WIL as one of the most successful Trotskyist groups in the world. This present volume covers a decisive time in history. It was the most testing time for British and world Trotskyism. As Hitler occupied Europe, the WIL was alone on the continent in applying the proletarian military policy that had been outlined by Trotsky. This it managed to do in the most successful fashion, allowing the WIL to establish an important proletarian base. We publish here only the articles that were either signed by Ted or that he drafted in his role as the WIL’s political secretary. He would have certainly written the vast bulk of the editorials of Socialist Appeal, but these have not been included. These writings constitute an essential and rich part of the theoretical heritage of Marxism, which can serve to educate the new generation of workers and youth who are entering into political activity at this time of deep capitalist crisis.

The Control Discipline
Author: Wendell Johnson
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 059536411X
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
If you live in the United States of America - It is an inescapable fact - your life is controlled by something or someone. Certainly you "believe" yourself to be independent and self-controlling, but that is far from the reality. History, environment, family, relatives, friends, and society all play a significant role in shaping your daily activity. This work is presented in three parts. The Self Control Discipline teaches how to rise above the norm and possess control in a manner that will change forever the way you perceive others through your own eyes. More important, it will change forever the way others see and interact with you. The Sexual Control Discipline demonstrates how to control others sexually attracted to you. Make no mistake; we live in a sexual society. Although most women erroneously believe they possess the ability to control men in the sexual environment, this work will show them their belief is wrong and misguided. Learn to take advantage of the premise regardless of your sexual inclinations. The Environmental Control Discipline teaches how to control those in your surrounds, including your boss, significant other, children, family, and friends. In the final analysis-If one wants to control mice One cannot be a mouse.

Sovereignty and Borders
Author: Edger J. Burton
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1491788143
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 61
Book Description
A nation that fails to protect its borders is not a nation at all. Rather, its a place that invites chaos, criminals, and subversives that will lead the land to become a mere footnote in the annals of history. Edger J. Burton explores how a nation that was once united is divided and in danger of coming apart at the seams in this extended essay that tackles the divisive issues that so many others avoid, such as race, gender, and ideology. Meanwhile, professional politicians with slick slogans like hope and change and fundamental transformation, continue to dupe the public into believing what they want about the future. The real meaning of these slogans, the author argues, is simply to get elected. Its time to seek real solutions to problems before theyre too big to solve. If we fail to fight back against misguided agendas, then it will only be a matter of time before the government, its people, and this once-great nation become irrelevant.

Crisis Lawyering
Author: Ray Brescia
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 1479835218
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
Shines a light on the emerging field of law dedicated to responding to and resolving the crises of the twenty-first century In an increasingly globalized world, a complex and interlocking web of nations, governments, non-state actors, laws, and rules affect human behavior. When crisis hits—whether that be extrajudicial detention, unprompted deportation, pandemics, or natural disasters—lawyers are increasingly among the first responders, equipped with the knowledge necessary to navigate the regulations of this ever more complex world. Crisis Lawyering explores this phenomenon and attempts to identify and define what it means to engage in the practice of law in crisis situations. In so doing, it hopes to sketch out the contours of the emerging field of crisis lawyering. Contributors to this volume explore cases surrounding domestic violence; dealing with immigrants in detention and banned from travel; policing in Ferguson, Missouri; the kidnapping of journalists; and climate change, among other crises. Their analysis not only serves as guidance to lawyers in such situations, but also helps others who deal with crises understand those crises—and the role of lawyers in them—better so that they may respond to them more effectively, efficiently, collaboratively and creatively. Crisis Lawyering shines a light on the emerging field of law dedicated to responding to and resolving the complex crises of the twenty-first century.
