Book Description
This report summarizes the present knowledge concerning the relationship among fabrication history, metallurgical structure, and the mechanical properites of the refractory metals columbium, tantalum, bolybdenum, and tungsten, and their alloys. These are the refractory metals currently reveiveing the most attention for aerospace applications, and are therefore the materials considered in this survey. The report is organized into three main sections, titled ''Fabrication'', ''Microstructure and Alloying'', and ''Interstitial Impurities''. The data presented were selected as those which best illustrate the topics discussed. Descriptions of the metaljurgical principles involved are included. Suggestions for optimizing mechanical properties by controlling metallurgical structure are made where possible. (Author).

Book Description
This report summarizes information on refractory composites for use above 2500 F, as presented at the Seventh Meeting of the Refractory Composites Working Group, held March 12-14, 1963. Reports presented at the meeting were concerned with pro tective coatings, insulating ceramics, materials for rocket thrust chambers, dispersion strength ening of metals, joining of refractory materials, and testing techniques. Emphasis in the field of coatings for refractory metals has shifted from the rudiments of developing oxidation-resistant coatings to improvement and advanced evaluation of coatings to predict their utility for re-entry vehicles. Book Description
The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. Book Description
A summary is presented of the status of the Department of Defense Refractory Metals SheetRolling Program to accelerate the development of production techniques for high-quality, consistent sheet products from the refractory metals (Nb, Mo, Ta, and W) and their alloys. The program includes: (1) development of sheet production techniques, (2) establishment of minimum data re uired to evaluate mill production, (3) evaluation of fabrication characteristics of the sheet produced, and (4) establishment of design data. Contracts were awarded for the development of sheet production techniques for all four refractory metals. One contract was awarded for the evaluation of Mo alloy sheet fabrication characteristics. Book Description
The semiaustenitic precipitation-hardenable stainless steels remain austenitic on cooling rom a solution heat treatment at about 1950 F. In this form they are readily fabricable. Subsequent treatment at about 1400 or at about 1725 F depletes the austenite of Cr and C to the extent that martensite forms on cooling to room temperature or -100 F, respectively. Final hardening is effected by tempering, or aging, at 750 to 1100 F. The semiaustenitic precipitation-hardenable stainless steels may be obtained as transformed at the mill by cold rolling. In this condition they lack the good formability of solution-heat-treated material. However, the fabricator need only temper them to obtain very high strengths. These steels have a combination of good formability, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance that is not easily matched by other materials.
