"A phenomenological study attempting to contribute to the body of knowledge by defining through a phenomenological qualitative framework, the spiritual abuse by Native American traditional healers. This study compared and contrasted data derived from interviews obtained from a sample population of nine Native American traditional Ojibwe elders and seven Native American traditional healers. Study subjects were obtained using the Delphi Method and represented five Ojibwe reservations in Minnesota, one Chippewa reservation in North Dakota, and one Dakota reservation in South Dakota. Study results indicated that all participants believed spiritual abuse occurred to varying degrees, and that it was detrimental to individuals and their respective tribal communities as it internalized oppression resulting from the loss of the Native American language and culture. Further, this loss of language and culture as documented in the literature was a direct result of historical genocide and the boarding school era. While all study subjects believed that efforts to reintegrate the language and culture into modern tribal communities was positive and instilled hope for the future, there was lack of agreement how best to do this. Findings explored the extreme loss to the tribal communities when offending healers were identified and unable to perform their healing roles as well as a strong desire to develop a cultural mechanism for reintegrating the offending healers with their victims and their communities"--Abstract, p. ii.

Elder Abuse and Its Prevention is the summary of a workshop convened in April 2013 by the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Global Violence Prevention. Using an ecological framework, this workshop explored the burden of elder abuse around the world, focusing on its impacts on individuals, families, communities, and societies. Additionally, the workshop addressed occurrences and co-occurrences of different types of abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, and financial, as well as neglect. The ultimate objective was to illuminate promising global and multisectoral evidence-based approaches to the prevention of elder maltreatment. While the workshop covered scope and prevalence and unique characteristics of abuse, the intention was to move beyond what is known about elder abuse to foster discussions about how to improve prevention, intervention, and mitigation of the victims' needs, particularly through collaborative efforts. The workshop discussions included innovative intervention models and opportunities for prevention across sectors and settings. Violence and related forms of abuse against elders is a global public health and human rights problem with far-reaching consequences, resulting in increased death, disability, and exploitation with collateral effects on well-being. Data suggest that at least 10 percent of elders in the United States are victims of elder maltreatment every year. In low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of violence is the greatest, the figure is likely even higher. In addition, elders experiencing risk factors such as diminishing cognitive function, caregiver dependence, and social isolation are more vulnerable to maltreatment and underreporting. As the world population of adults aged 65 and older continues to grow, the implications of elder maltreatment for health care, social welfare, justice, and financial systems are great. However, despite the magnitude of global elder maltreatment, it has been an underappreciated public health problem. Elder Abuse and Its Prevention discusses the prevalence and characteristics of elder abuse around the world, risk factors for abuse and potential adverse health outcomes, and contextually specific factors, such as culture and the role of the community.

This qualitative study examines the concept of intentional spiritual harm and the process of providing spiritual healing treatment to individuals afflicted with this condition. The practice of spiritual healing remains prevalent within contemporary Caribbean culture, and spiritual workers of Trinidad and Tobago can be considered modern-day shamans who heal both physical and spiritual ailments. Their work includes healing and protecting clients from practitioners who cause intentional spiritual harm (ISH). This study interviewed 18 spiritual workers, all natives of Trinidad and Tobago, in order to understand the lived experience of a spiritual worker who treats this condition. The spiritual workers interviewed reflect the diversity of Caribbean culture, and include a Christian faith healer, a Hindu Pundit, a Muslim Imam, and two metaphysical lightworkers; the remainder identified as Orisha Babalawos, Spiritual Baptist Bishops and church Mothers, or Kabbalist practitioners, following in the African traditions and practicing either one religion or all three under what has been called the threefold path (Crosson, 2020). Three additional participants who were not spiritual workers were included for their knowledge of ISH; I have also included an account of my own experiences related to this phenomenon. Thematic content analysis of interviews yielded 44 major theme and two sub-themes, including themes that provide a step-by-step account of the process of spiritual treatment of ISH commencing with the attack, the manifestation of the attack in the health or life situation of the client, steps in the treatment process, and evidence of resolution in the client. In addition, the interviews yielded 38 brief narratives of ISH cases shared by spiritual workers, comments that each of the 18 spiritual workers wished members of academia to know, and three additional narratives by non-practitioners acquainted with the phenomenon of ISH.
