Book Description
Excerpt from A Puritan Pagan: A Novel Everything has its market. A rich gentleman dying of consumption had been recommended to try the South. From the window of his slowly moving train he espied this estate, with its noble forests. With a whim of invalidism, he stopped at the next station and sent back to ask its price. He was shortly answered by a crabbed agent, who ran the farm with worse than no success, that it was "not for sale." What had been a mere freak, a passing caprice, sprang at once into a fierce longing. A large sura was offered. Sorchan, to whom the offer was communicated, knew little of business, yet realized that be had no right to refuse such an unlooked-for opportunity. He therefore signed the deed which conveyed the property of his infant child, and invested a part of the money in the house by the river, where they now lived, placing the rest in trust to accumulate for her until she should be of age. He was himself of New England origin, but the great metropolis of the Northern States sucks unto itself most of the ambition, vigor, and enterprise of the land. It is at once the encourager of labor and its reward. This home seemed just what was required. The baby could play in the shade, and the father could enjoy the repose of the country or whirl in the vortex of men at his wish. Book Description
Excerpt from Puritan and Pagan He heard her voice for the first time over the telephone, and up to that time he had never seen her. Yet her name had been a household word in his home for all the four years since his marriage; and in four years a man grows accustomed, often sadly accustomed, to household words. But he was alone in New York, and a stranger; and the business which had brought him there was not going so well as he had hoped it might. Moreover, he had promised J o that he would go to see Nancy. There was a little delay in answering; but when at length her voice reached his ears, he discovered that it was a pleasantly pitched voice, though speaking now with some impatience. This is Anne Desmond. Who is this, please? Max gave his name, and added an Sxplanatory phrase. Her tone changed at once. Oh, of course I want to see you, Mr. Meredith, and hear all about J o. Are you frightfully busy? I can suit your time, I think, he answered. When shall you yourself be free? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
