Book Description
In the past hundred years, some fifty international languages have been devised. But what was first needed was an international alphabet. Such an alphabet is needed for a number of reasons. First, it is needed for international communication. An international traveler knowing this alphabet would be able to instantly determine his location by reading signs written with the alphabet. Second, it would make language learning easier since language books would be written with this alphabet. And third, it would make reading and spelling easier for everyone. The proposed alphabet must meet the following conditions: (1) it must be phonetic, (2) it must have a reasonable number of symbols, (3) it must have simple symbols, and (4) it must be acceptable to as many of the world’s people as possible. The thirty-letter international alphabet presented here meets these criteria.

Book Description
In The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal, Duane R. Karna brings together 30 essays by experts from around the world to describe how the character symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) can be used by singers in the choral rehearsal. Holding firmly to the belief that basic instruction in IPA character is part of a choir's training, Karna and his contributors see enormous potential for choirs to expand considerably their foreign-language repertoire and save considerable rehearsal time. The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal is the ideal primer for choral directors and choirmasters as well as choir members.

Book Description
An indispensable comprehensive reference guide to the phonetic alphabet symbols, revised and expanded. Phonetic Symbol Guide is a comprehensive and authoritative encyclopedia of phonetic alphabet symbols, providing a complete survey of the hundreds of characters used by linguists and speech scientists to record the sounds of the world’s languages. This fully revised second edition incorporates the major revisions to the International Phonetic Alphabet made in 1989 and 1993. Also covered are the American tradition of transcription stemming from the anthropological school of Franz Boas; the Bloch/Smith/Trager style of transcription; the symbols used by dialectologists of the English language; usages of specialists such as Slavicists, Indologists, Sinologists, and Africanists; and the transcription proposals found in all major textbooks of phonetics. With sixty-one new entries, an expanded glossary of phonetic terms, added symbol charts, and a full index, this book will be an indispensable reference guide for students and professionals in linguistics, phonetics, anthropology, philology, modern language study, and speech science. Praise for the First Edition of Phonetic Symbol Guide “A useful and convenient reference work in dictionary form.” —Marc Picard, Canadian Journal of Linguistics “Pullum and Ladusaw have compiled a unique . . . and very enjoyable book. . . .
