Book Description
Abstract: "We consider the synthesis of separation processes to create relatively pure products while using separation devices that are incapable of sharply splitting their products. The use of distillation for separating azeotropic mixtures is, perhaps, the most prominent example of this class of problems. Economic designs contain recycles, a feature not required, and generally not present, in processes which separate ideally behaving mixtures. Focusing on separating azeotropic mixtures, we propose and illustrate an approach for the systematic conceptual design of these complex separation schemes. Strategic use of recycles permits the design of processes requiring fewer units and often also permitting separation without additional mass separating agents. A key step in our proposed synthesis methodology is the assessment of the products attainable in each separation step. Thus, the synthesis of separation schemes for azeotropic mixtures is an important application of the methods presented in two previous papers (Wahnschafft et al., 1992a; Wahnschafft and Westerberg, 1992) to determine the product composition regions of homogeneous azeotropic distillation columns."

Book Description
Originally published in 2004, Distillation Theory and Its Application to Optimal Design of Separation Units presents a clear, multidimensional geometric representation of distillation theory that is valid for all distillation column types, splits, and mixtures. This representation answers such fundamental questions as: what are the feasible separation products for a given mixture? What minimum power is required to separate a given mixture? What minimum number of trays is necessary to separate a given mixture at a fixed power input? This book is intended for students and specialists in the design and operation of separation units in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, wood, petrochemical, oil-refining, and natural gas industries and for software designers.

Book Description
Much of the pollution in the air, water or soil results from discharges from industrial activities. Industrial practice can be significantly altered to reduce or eliminate the pollution if processes and products are so designed that either toxic materials are not used, or processes are inherently less polluting. This book is a collection of methods, written by experts, that would enable industry to design benign processes at the outset to achieve this purpose.
