Book Description
Excerpt from A Plea for Eclectic Medicine The necessity of reform in medicine, politics or religion, is never broached by the established or ruling class. The slightest innovations upon time honored customs, is met by the cry of heresy - hence, chronic evils in the body politic, remain so long uncorrected. The dearest liberties of the people have never been obtained except they were wrested from the grasp of tyrants. The free and restless spirit which unlocked the monkish Cloisters of the middle ages, giving breadth and scope to conscience, lib erty and learning, at length gave birth to Eclecticism, in religion. Law and medicine. But these strides in the way of professional freedom and ad vancement, were not made without struggles, conflicts and revolutions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Eclectic Practice of MedicineFever is divided into two classes, idiopathic and symptomatic in the first, there is no apreciable lesion Of the solids, at least at its commencement, we therefore say that it is primarily a disease Of the fluids Of the body; in the second there is pri marily an inflammation which induces febrile reaction, the fever being a secondary disease. What change in the fluids of the body will give rise to fever? I know of but one, and that is the presence Of some material that has so far lost its vitalization that it can not be applied to the nutrition Of the textures, or serve any purpose in the animal economy. Such material may be generated within the body, or it may be introduced from without. In order to prove this proposition, I will describe next.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical Eclectic, Vol. 1 By Eclecticism we understand no meaningless expression, no mere negative protest, no waiving of originality, no such medley as would be likely from selecting and combining with out unity, principle, or a consistent system. From the first we have learned our lesson differently. We have been ready and desirous to perceive and apprehend the good which was in all creeds and schools, although compelled, not always without sadness and disappointment, to acknowledge that none was wholly unexceptionable. In this we have acted in the spirit of the philosophical Eclecticism of former times, which sought to eliminate fiom all systems their accretions of error and human invention, in order to exhibit the Divine Wisdom itself, which underlies and permeates all real knowledge. We believe with Plato, that the office of instruction is to bring such knowledge within the field of human consciousness; and to do this, the extraneous matter which mistaken men have added and interpolated, must be removed. The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind; which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
