Thirty-four subjects divided into two groups were confined for 8 hrs in a lighted 5 by 8 ft cubicle where they worked occasionally on tracking, monitoring, and time estimation tasks and noted somatic complaints. Visual illusions were administered before and after confinement. Twenty subjects in another group underwent all of the tests but were not confined. A battery of personality tests was given to the subjects 1-3 months before they participated. Correlations among the personality test scores, the changes in visual illusions, and the performance tasks were computed. The results of the performance tasks showed no significant differences between the confined and nonconfined groups. Time estimated did not vary significantly during confinement. Confirmatory evidence was gained favoring the use of the spiral after-effect and rejecting and latency of autokinesis as criterion measures of confinement stress.

This book focuses on those special circumstances in which men (alone or in groups) are isolated or confined for periods of time long enough to affect the way in which they think and behave. Active research in these phenomena initially grew out of a concern about prisoners of war in Korea and the presumed effects of "brainwashing," but this interest has been augmented by the technological advances that have allowed men to enter into isolation situations previously unattainable--in outer space, under the sea, on the face of the moon, or in remote places on the earth's surface. For the scientist himself, applications of the knowledge derived from these special situations is obvious. The variety of ways in which the search may be carried on, in both the laboratory and "real-life" situations, is amply illustrated in the approaches as well as the settings for research that are reviewed in this volume. This book represents the first attempt to cover the total spectrum of isolation and confinement in one volume. The chapters are arranged so as to begin with study of the individual, proceed through artificial and natural groups, and conclude with broad ecological and taxonomic considerations. This book surveys the conceptual, methodological, and policy dimensions of incapacitation in the U.S. Incapacitation - preventing people from committing crimes by locking them up - is now the dominant justification for imprisonment in the United States, but how well does it suppress crime? Part I reviews this history of incapacitation from its first analytic discussion by Jeremy Bentham in 1802 to the studies and commentaries of the 1980s, and shows it became the dominant official justification for imprisonment. Part II examines incapacitation research, including the authors' analysis of the effects on California's crime rate of an increase of more than 100,000 in prison and jail populations. Part III looks at the relationship between knowledge regarding incapacitation and the formulation of penal policy. It argues that that the amount of crime prevented by incapacitation is both variable and contingent, varying in relation to different social circumstances and under different criminal justice policies. No prospect exists for discovering a unitary level or pattern of crime prevention that might be achieved by penal restraint. The balance of desert and proportionality with preventive potential, as well as approximate calculations of cost and benefit, are the inescapable elements of decisions about the scope of preventive confinement in modern criminal justice. This PHD project has been based on 100% studio practice; the original title for the research programme was Between Reality and Fiction and aimed at exploring the construction of reality and truth in our society, a society strictly controlled by the mass media. Whilst developing the first project within this body of research - Isolation (an attempt to contrast a real life experience of a visit to a prison with existing institutional information obtained through second and third hand sources - readings, media, films ...), a range of other more pertinent concepts arose, causing a shift from those initial ideas to ones incorporating control, displacement and space, understanding this, not only as a physical entity, but also as a socio-political construction. Based on the different projects that form the basis of my research, I explored the concept of control and how that is exercised on individuals in free/democratic societies- from spatial control (access/no access), economical, cultural (oneself/others), medical/technological, or media control (the creation of public opinion). This research attempts to question/reflect public awareness of these control measures, in order to assess their limitations, whilst investigating any existing gaps in the system which could potentially subvert it. What has been particularly relevant has been the exploration of issues relating to space, understood not only as a physical entity, but also as a socio-political construction, how space is organised, divided and controlled in an era of globalisation, and whether, or why access to certain 'spaces' is either severely restricted or completely denied. Work developed during the PhD has consisted of: Practical studio research (mainly installations, video and photography), site specific visits/trips relevant to particular themes within the project (HMP Winchester, Strait of Gibraltar, Canary Islands, container depots, airports ...); related readings; compilation of explicit news reportage; and the construction of an extensive archive that includes all printed and digital matter tracking the entire research process and its methodology. Personal experience has also been a main factor, influencing the development of specific research: temporary/precarious housing, part-time jobs, or in general, the situation of living abroad with all that that implies in the way of physical and cultural displacement.
