Mass-consistent modeling is an attempt to derive snapshots of the mean wind field over a section of terrain from given sets of measured wind fields. The modeling scheme presented is based on the assumption that the best mass-conserving wind field is a strong function of the interpolation technique for the measured winds and a weak function of the mass conservation scheme. The proposed scheme includes the following special features: a terrain-following coordinate system, an arbitrarily defined upper boundary, and a provision for density stratification. The accuracy and utility of the scheme was tested against an analytically derived wind field flowing over an analytically defined terrain.

An ensemble method is presented based on the perturbation of the numerical weather prediction models’ results. The book goes on to explain solar radiation characterization and forecasting. Solar radiation and electrical power generation temporal and spatial variability are discussed and modelled. Different statistical methods are presented in order to improve solar radiation forecasting using ground measurement, numerical weather predictions (NWPs) and satellite-derived data. A model for calculating terrain-influenced surface (6 meter) wind fields is described. The model determines locally generated slope and valley winds as well as mechanically affected changes in the general wind due to sheltering, diverting, ridge enhancement, and separated flow. A procedure is also given for the generation of an optimal computation grid on which the wind field is computed. Winds calculated on this optimal, and usually uneven grid, may then be interpolated by the model to a uniform grid specified by the user. The model is designed to compute wind fields without the need for surface observations. Analysis areas are arbitrary, ranging from as small as 1 sq km to as large as 50 sq km.
