Book Description
This study includes recommendations for improvement of the water quality in the Fox Chain of Lakes. Nuisance algal blooms, periodic fish kills, and offensive odors are discussed. It is recommended that Illinois and Wisconsin work together to address the problems with these waters. The flow through the 9 lakes that make of the "Chain O'Lakes" contributes to the major portion of flow in the Fox River.

Problem Lakes in the United States
Author: Martha J. Ketelle
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Lakes
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
A survey of 452 eutrophic lakes was compiled based on responses from 40 states requesting information as to (a) Name, location, size, depth; (b) Description of the problem, including accounts of previous corrective treatments, if any; (c) Remedial action that might be appropriate; (d) A description of available background data, indicating whether sufficient data exists to document a change if rehabilitation were undertaken. Categories of the problems in the survey were: nuisance algal growth, nuisance aquatic vegetation, fishkills, bacterial contamination, toxic contamination, oil brines, unstable water levels, siltation, excessive dissolved solids, and unspecified eutrophic conditions. Sources contributing to these problems were classified in two general categories--concentrated sources and diffused sources. Indication is given, where available, whether progress has been made to eliminate the pollution source.

The Lakes Handbook
Author: Patrick O'Sullivan
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470999268
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 712
Book Description
Continuing concern about water supply and quality, ecosystem sustainability and restoration demands that the modern approach to the management of lakes and reservoirs should be based on a sound understanding of the application of the scientific and ecological principles that underlie freshwater processes. The Lakes Handbook provides an up-to-date overview of the application of ecologically sound approaches, methods and tools using experience gained around the world for an understanding of lakes and their management. Volume one of the Handbook addresses the physical and biological aspects of lakes pertinent to lake management, emphasising those aspects particularly relevant to large, still bodies of water. Volume two then considers lake management, with particular emphasis on sustainability, restoration and rehabilitation. This handbook will be invaluable to ecologists, environmental scientists, physical geographers and hydrologists involved in limnological research, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students looking for authoritative reviews of the key areas of limnological study. Brings together basic science and management issues. International coverage and international authors. Reviews management issues at a level suitable for the non-expert.
