Book Description
Don Hamachers life story can almost be a handbook for a happy existence. After graduating from college, he dreams of becoming a US Marine band director, but his poor eyesight results in an honorable discharge. Luckily, he still sees well enough to keep his eyes on Maggie, his college sweetheart. After he lands a job at a high school in Robinson, Illinois, the two are married in 1944. Almost seventy years later, they are still married. More than just a family man, however, Don has also been a musician, teacher, traveler, pilot, historian, and risk taker. A flair for the dramatic led him to team up with his friend and colleague Jim Griggs to form the Dog N Suds franchise. Its evolution from a single hot dog and root beer establishment in Illinois to franchises throughout the United States and Canada shows that, with hard work, dreams really can come true. In this memoir, you can see how living a life defined by enthusiasm, determination, and love leads to rich rewards.

Forms of the Cinematic
Author: Mark Breeze
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501361449
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
This interdisciplinary collection explores how cinema calls into question its own frame of reference and, at the same time, how its form becomes the matter of its thought. Building on the axiom (cherished by philosophers of cinema from Epstein to Deleuze) that cinema is a medium that thinks in conjunction with its spectators, this book examines how various forms of the cinematic rethink and redraw the terrain of traditional disciplines, thereby enabling different modes of thought and practice. Areas under consideration by a range of leading academics and practitioners include architecture, science, writing in a visual field, event-theory and historiography.

Justice & Nature
Author: John Martin Gillroy
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 496
Book Description
Gillroy (environmental policy and law, Bucknell U.) argues against the economic cost-benefit model prevalent in environmental policy-making and offers an alternative. His paradigm, based upon Kantian philosophy, incorporates non-market factors, including the intrinsic value of humanity and nature, into public decision making. This approach is then applied to wilderness preservation, national wildlife refuges, "NIMBY" siting dilemmas, comparative risk analysis, the Food and Drug Administration's risk regulation, and the National Environmental Policy Act. The Right to Landscape
Author: Shelley Egoz
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351882791
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 351
Book Description
Associating social justice with landscape is not new, yet the twenty-first century's heightened threats to landscape and their impact on both human and, more generally, nature's habitats necessitate novel intellectual tools to address such challenges. This book offers that innovative critical thinking framework. The establishment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, in the aftermath of Second World War atrocities, was an aspiration to guarantee both concrete necessities for survival and the spiritual/emotional/psychological needs that are quintessential to the human experience. While landscape is place, nature and culture specific, the idea transcends nation-state boundaries and as such can be understood as a universal theoretical concept similar to the way in which human rights are perceived. The first step towards the intellectual interface between landscape and human rights is a dynamic and layered understanding of landscape. Accordingly, the 'Right to Landscape' is conceived as the place where the expansive definition of landscape, with its tangible and intangible dimensions, overlaps with the rights that support both life and human dignity, as defined by the UDHR. By expanding on the concept of human rights in the context of landscape this book presents a new model for addressing human rights - alternative scenarios for constructing conflict-reduced approaches to landscape-use and human welfare are generated. This book introduces a rich new discourse on landscape and human rights, serving as a platform to inspire a diversity of ideas and conceptual interpretations. The case studies discussed are wide in their geographical distribution and interdisciplinary in the theoretical situation of their authors, breaking fresh ground for an emerging critical dialogue on the convergence of landscape and human rights.
