Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of the Petroleum Industry, Vol. 1 of 2 Wherever petroleum occurs in nature, natural gas is generally found in the same locality or region. Gas, however, is less restricted in its distribution than is oil, and numerous gas pools exist where no petroleum occurs in close proximity. Because of the relationship of natural gas to petroleum, the two substances must, to a consider able extent, be considered together. Both petroleum and natural gas are among the great industrial resources of the world and the countries which possess them in large quantities are exceedingly fortunate. The fact that these substances have not yet been developed in a particular locality is rarely proof of their absence, as no year passes without the discovery of new and often unsuspected fields or pools. The occurrence of oil and gas is widespread, no stratified rock being so young, and scarcely any so old, as absolutely to preclude their existence. Consequently, any country in which geological conditions are favorable is warranted in exerting every effort and undertaking great expense to investigate and determine its resources in petroleum and natural gas. In this outline of the occurrence of petroleum the numerous references made use of are given credit where possible. In addition to those specifically mentioned there are certain general sources of information, such as the report of S. F. Peckham entitled, The Production, Technology and Uses of Petroleum and its Products, in volume 10 Of the Tenth Census of the United States, 1880, pages 1-319' A Treatise on Petroleum by Sir Boverton Redwood, London, 1913, three volumes; Petroleum Mining and Oil Field Development, by Arthur Beeby Thompson, London, 1916, 648 pages; the annual statis tical reports in the Mineral Resources series of the United States Geological Survey, by David T. Day, S. H. Shotwell, Joseph D. Weeks, F. H. Oliphant, W. T. Griswold and John D. Northrop, and many other Geological Survey references of a general nature. In this chapter the word oil is frequently used as being sufficiently synonymous with petroleum for the subject matter in hand. Book Description
Excerpt from The Petroleum Industry, Vol. 1 This book has been written with the definite purpose of helping men and women, far removed from the Oil Fields, to "see" the Petroleum Industry - as it really is. Thousands of people who are interested either directly or indirectly in the Petroleum Industry may never actually see an oil well, or a tank farm, or a pipe line, or a refinery - but these people want to know, and should know, about Petroleum. This marvelous thing, Petroleum, is industrially too vital to us today, and financially too close to us, for any man or woman not to know something about it. This book tries to tell Petroleum's story - briefly, frankly, impartially and accurately. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Petroleum: Its Production and Use The following pages have been reprinted from the Journal of the Society of Arts, London, with the omissions of such portions as would seem to be of little or no interest to American readers. The petroleum industry occupies a wide field in this country, and the amount of capital invested in it is very great, and while, therefore, all that was stated by Mr. Redwood in his lectures was admirable, and doubtless of much interest to his English hearers, very much, on the other hand, would prove to be of no material value to the American reader. We feel on the whole, however, that the subject matter of these lectures, with the exceptions stated, are worth preservation, and believe that all that is here given will be found to be of interest to readers here. It has been deemed better to change the matter from the lecture form in which it appeared in the columns of the Journal of the Society of Arts.
