Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of French Phonetics This little book is intended as a manual for elementary and advanced students of the French language. In elementary courses it may be employed as a substitute for the pages devoted to pronunciation in whatever Grammar the teacher is using. In such courses the material printed in small type should be omitted. In advanced courses, the book may be used as a basis for a review of the pronunciation, and as a reference book. The authors have endeavored to present the essential facts of French pronunciation, but have purposely excluded the treatment of minor variations in sound (for example, intermediate vowel qualities) and the registration of words which are distinctly rare. In many cases Frenchmen themselves vary in the utterance of a given word or group of words: in such cases we have generally given only the variety which seems approved by the best usage. For such disputed questions, and for all matters of greater detail, the reader is urged to consult the books listed in the Bibliography. We have endeavored to present the essential facts as clearly and effectively as possible. Most earlier publications on the same subject mingle the treatment of the several sounds with the rules for the pronunciation of the several letters. The results of such a method seem to us unfortunate: the student confuses his material, and rarely concentrates his attention on the really important matter - the actual learning of the difficult French sounds. These dangers we have tried to avoid by treating, first, one by one, the several sounds; then, one by one, the several letters. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical French Phonetics This book aims to help students of French to overcome the difficulties which confront them when they try to acquire a correct pronunciation of that language. It is the result of many years' successful experience in teaching phonetics to American students. The author is thoroughly familiar with the difficulties of pronunciation which they encounter, and understands how to lead them to acquire a good French accent. The book discusses the principles of voice production, illustrates by means of two cuts the organs of speech, and gives the exact position of these organs in making each French sound. It devotes a chapter to the vowels and one to consonants, giving the phonetic symbol for each sound with a paragraph explaining its use. One chapter is devoted entirely to daily exercises for the pupil's practice. Another is given to phonetic transcription of French stories and poems, the same piece of literature being presented in two columns, side by side, one in the regular Roman print and the other in the phonetic alphabet. The vocabulary at the end furnishes the student with the meaning of every French word and idiom occurring in the chapter on phonetic transcription. Book Description
Excerpt from First Principles of French Pronunciation This book is for English-speaking people. It has a three fold object. First, it should serve those general readers or speakers of French whose feeling for the language is such that they will not rest content with a mere rough-and-ready approximation to the way in which it is pronounced by Frenchmen. Secondly, its concern is with teachers and their pupils already devoted to the direct method of modem-language study, as also with those who are liberal enough to give that method a trial. Thirdly, it may furnish a handy epitome of its subject for academic students of French, whose needs must be met more in detail by the advanced investigations of the recognized specialists, and particularly those native to the language. Excerpt from A Primer of French Pronunciation I have had no phonetic theories in the preparation of this Primer. I have dismissed them whenever they suggested themselves, preferring rather to lay myself open to criticism on this score than to burden the book with confusing details. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Introduction to French Phonetics: For the Use of English-Speaking Students and Teachers In the first part of this book I have endeavoured to fix the identity of each sound in standard French by (i) giving a list of its traditional spellings, (ii) defining the position of the organs of speech necessary for its production, and (iii) explaining its relations to other sounds, usually its nearest English analogues. Where the pronunciation of the latter fluctuates, reference is made to the most important varia tions, including those current In America and Australia. Occasion is everywhere taken to warn the student against the errors' into which he will be most likely to fall. The second part deals with the factors which control the combination of sounds in connected speech. One needs only an elementary acquaintance with the language to be aware that a knowledge of these factors is of vital import ance. Here, again, wherever they seemed likely to be helpful, comparisons have been drawn between the two languages. Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Primer of French Phonetics and Inflection This little book of phonetics is intended to serve as a historical primer, introductory to my enlarged edition of Brachet's Historical French Grammar. The want of some such elementary book has long been felt by English students. The scheme of the Historical French Grammar made it impracticable to detach the phonetic section of that work and issue It separately. It was, therefore, considered advisable to supply an independent book on the subject, which, while complete in itself, should serve as an introductory primer to the larger work. It is hoped that the present handbook may meet this want. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
